I traced this, and found that zvt (gnome-libs/zvt), a terminal widget,
uses a suid root helper program. Apparently the old install had been
frobbed by someone with appropriate bits, but the install done by me
was not. "gnome-terminal --nowtmp --noutmp --nodbupdate" works.
There are a couple of options:
1) make the helper program setuid root. This is the easiest solution.
2) fix zvt so that it is possible to build it without the setuid root
functionality. This is the best solution, but is unlikely to be
a good use of our resources.
3) fix zvt in some kludgy way.
4) submit a bug report, look at it again in 3 months.
I suggest doing 1 and 4. Comments? Someone bitful willing to volunteer
to implement 1?
