zlib builds different on 8.3 and 8.4 machines

Tibbetts's build machine recently switched from 8.3 to 8.4.
After going to 8.4, he rebuilt zlib, causing the sawfish binaries
(built on 8.3) to break. The error is:
hodge-podge$ add -f aui ; sawfish
ld.so.1: sawfish: fatal: relocation error: file /mit/aui/arch/sun4x_56/lib/libz.so: symbol __register_frame_info: referenced symbol not found
Killed
I rebuilt and installed zlib on hodge-podge (an 8.3 Ultra 5), and
sawfish went back to working.
