Ok, with Richard's help, I found the controls for labelling menus and
the logout button. In the process of doing a non-Athena Gnome
install, I also came across the icons for Nautilus (the file manager)
and Evolution (the mail reader) and a non-gratitously-3D icon for
Netscape. I also realized that current thinking had settled on
removing Emacs from the set of icons on the panel, and putting it up
in the menu system (along with other text editors) instead. With all
these revelations, we finally have something which actually resembles
what the public version might look not unlike. 8)

See:

There are some obvious problems with overlapping text and graphics,
which, as Richard mentioned, is probably a bug(s) that will be fixed.

If you want to get the new icons individually, they are available at:

http://web.mit.edu/aui/pix/evolution.png
http://web.mit.edu/aui/pix/netscape.png

Also of note are "tooltips." These are the little blobs of text that
pop up when the user's mouse is over the icon. So when you point at
Netscape, it might say "Web browser" and when you point at XTerm, it
might say "athena% prompt (command line)" or whatnot.

At the risk of adding more later, I think that's all for now. 8)
