I don't see how this is really a problem for tracking which printers
people have jobs on.

Certainly they will. The applet that sits there and lpq's all the
printers in the list periodically can purge printers where the user
has no jobs from the list.

Does this really happen? That will confuse things. Could you explain
further? I have never seen this situation, is it common?
