Yep, it does. On my test VM, I'm in the unfortunate position of getting
ratpoison attempting to manage a full GNOME desktop, and :quit in
ratpoison doesn't quit my session but leaves me with no window manager.
I support not honoring WINDOW_MANAGER in general, since most people I know
with custom WMs don't want GNOME (ratpoison, xmonad, ion3, twm/mwm). But
there are window managers like Sawfish and apparently fvwm that work fine
with GNOME.
Perhaps we just need to provide documentation for a standard GNOME-ish
.xsession and a standard totally-non-GNOME .xsession.

Regarding Quentin's e-mail, that only affects window managers installed
locally, not e.g. the windowmanagers locker. I have some code I keep
forgetting to commit that suppresses the nonstandard dropdowns in that
box, anyway.
