Just to throw the idea out there, there's libnotify, and notify-send in
the libnotify-bin package, that places standard GNOME alerts in the corner
of the screen. One idea would be collecting user startup messages and
displaying them in a single message, and popping up syslogs / root login
notifications as they arrive.
