I use xconsole to display system messages on my personal systems.
However, I ran into some trouble getting it to interact well with gdm,
even with KillInitClients disabled, and wound up punting to xdm, which
may be too retro for Athena 10; I presume workalikes would likewise
run into trouble.  (Then again, I last tested a while ago, and didn't
try as hard as I perhaps could have because I was okay with falling
back on xdm, so there may still be hope.)
