Hmm...I've only done a little investigation, but g77 (specifically,
gcc-3.4) was built by from the gcc-3.4 package. The g77 packages seem to
have gone away around the time gcc 4.something was introduced. Do modern
versions of gcc still include g77 and Debian just isn't building it?
Even if g77 still is available, I think that this is a pretty major
change to a very core package. We're extraordinarily unlikely to get a
freeze exception for this for Jaunty. For that matter, I think we're
unlikely to get it into Ubuntu without it coming in through Debian.
