Hi Sanjoy -
Unfortunately, there are currently some issues with building
Debathena's patched version of bash for Lenny, so we had to switch to
the unpatched version (see Debian bug #488666 -
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=488666).

The primary difference between Debathena's bash and the
distribution-provided bash is support for ~locker paths.

In general, we encourage you to use the /mit automounter instead of
~locker paths. If you just refer to /mit/6.055/www, that causes
/mit/6.055 to come into existence - no need to attach lockers like there
was on previous versions of Athena.

As for the second problem, it's hard to say specifically what happened.
That being said, it seems unlikely to have been caused by the recent
changes to Debian unstable - those only affected the outdated Kerberos 4
library, and shouldn't affect remote logins to any modern system - or
the upgrade to Lenny. It seems likely that something changed in your
laptop's configuration, but I'm not really sure what that might have
been. I'm glad you found the answer on our website, though.
