I did this much, and started ssh, but not the next step:

># disable auto-reseting the cluster root; why does this exist anyway?
>rm /etc/cron.daily/debathena-cluster-login-config

but then I can only ssh in while still logged in on the cluster
machine. Is there any reason I would lose ability to ssh in (or have sshd
stop) when I log out there, or would the last step I didn't do
cause that? Or something else?
