At some point in a not so distant future (optimism today - the Sun is up)
we will start doing backup/restores using ABS. Let call that day V-day. Suppose
somebody wants to restore a volume to its image of V-day - n. At that time we
need to use a a tape produced by the backup system we use now. What are
the implications of this statement ? :

 a. We have to be able to run the backup system we use now for some length of
time (some people said 6 months from V-day but I claim it could be longer).
Unfortunately we can do this only up to the moment we convert the AFS servers to
3.4a. If we need to continue doing restores of old tapes after the AFS servers
are at 3.4a, we need to port our specific changes to 3.4a AFS backup subsystem
and use this new AFS backup system for restoring backups done now.

 b. Or we have to be able to do ABS restores using the tapes and the information
from the backup system we use now. In fact establish in ABS a feature for
restoring "foreign tapes" using "foreign info".

In my opinion we have to discuss what we do next. Do we port our changes to AFS
3.4a backup subsystem ? Do we try to restore "foreign tapes" through ABS ? Do we
try to keep AFS to 3.3a ? We have to answer somehow to these concerns and decide
which way we go .

I propose using some not so distant future ABS meeting to decide about it.

Miki.
