zephyrd and zhm exit immediately under FreeBSD 2.2.7

I have compiled zephyr-2.0.4 under FreedBSD 2.2.7 without Kerberos or
Hesiod, non-athena environment and when I try to run zephyrd from the
/usr/local/sbin directory it prints the following error
cs96s-1# ./zephyrd
cs96s-1# Jul 21 07:36:10 cs96s-1 zephyrd[3125]: no gethostbyname repsonse

I have created the server.list file in /usr/local/etc/zephyr with one entry
for the host I am trying to run the server on
also when I attempt to run zhm I get the following error
cs96s-1# /usr/local/sbin/zhm -d cs96-1.eecs.harvard.edu
hm: Can't assign port opening port
I need to get this running soon for a class project so any help would be
appreciated.

p.s. many years ago I was the first person to get zephyr running at
CMU.........so I used to know how to make this work...... :-(
