I think you're right about where the pid should go.
As for the location of files in CONFDIR vs. DATADIR: the distinction
is not whether the files are platform-dependent, but whether they are
configuration files (which may need to be local to the machine) or
data files. Unfortunately, the line isn't completely clear, but I
think the default subscriptions file should be called a configuration
file.
