t r u t h o u t | "It is easier to build strong children than to repair bro=
ken men."
=E2=80=95 Frederick Douglass
This quote struck a chord within me this past week, as Truthout featured st=
ories at both ends of this spectrum. Rania Khalek took a hard look at the p=
olitics of school closings in D.C. - part of a wave of education "reforms" =
across America that have little to do with educational quality. And our own=
beloved Maya Schenwar continued her work on the horrendous problems of Ame=
rican prisons, where prisoners are tossed away while being branded as almos=
t non-human. We are contemplating the sadness at each end of Douglass' quot=
e.
But Truthout doesn't just report this news to you and move on to the next t=
ragedy. Our writers and analysts drill down into why these things are happe=
ning, who benefits from exploiting children and prisoners, and, most import=
antly, what needs to done to make it right.
I am glad that so many of you come to Truthout to read more than the news, =
and appreciate the depth of our analysis. However, we can't do it without y=
our help: This fundraising drive has started slowly, and we need to raise a=
t least $25,000 more to meet our goal. So I am asking you to give a little =
extra, if you can, so that we can continue the work that is so important to=
our society.
