Robert Reich | A Good Fight
http://www.truth-out.org/good-fight/1316540233
Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "So the really big fight - perhaps the defining battle of 2012 - won't be over Medicare. It won't even be over Obama's jobs program. It will be over whether the rich should pay more taxes. The President has vowed to veto any plan to tame the debt that doesn't increase taxes on the rich. The Republicans have vowed to oppose any tax increases on the rich. It's a good fight to have."
Killing the Cranes: A Reporter's Journey Through Three Decades of War in Afghanistan
http://www.truth-out.org/killing-cranes-reporters-journey-through-three-decades-war-afghanistan/1316528471
Edward Girardet, Chelsea Green Publishing: "For those familiar with Afghanistan, the killing of the IAM team underscored the brutal reality that much of this mountain and desert country at the cusp of Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent had become a perilous, no-go zone. Whereas parts of the country, including Nuristan and the neighboring province of Badakshan where the murders took place, had been considered relatively safe for aid workers, the Afghan traditions of hospitality and protection of guests had finally and irretrievably been shattered. Decades of conflict, competing worldviews, and outside interests had turned Afghanistan into a land where neither the Western-backed Kabul government nor the insurgents are in control - and basic humanity seems to have vanished."
William Rivers Pitt | Truthout After Ten Years
http://www.truth-out.org/truthout-after-ten-years/1316533020
William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "As one ten-year anniversary slowly recedes in our collective rear-view mirror, it behooves me to make strong note of another. I don't know what brought you to Truthout - 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, the invasion of Iraq, the WMD lies, the fake terror alerts, the exposure of Abu Ghraib and our profligate use of torture, the fact of our domestic surveillance of ourselves, the elections, the financial crisis, the lies compounded by lies, or the fact that the 'mainstream' media is so full of shit you can smell them around the corner - but here you are, and thank you for it."

Rachel Maddow, The Rachel Maddow Show: Michael Moore, author of "Here Comes Trouble," talks with Rachel Maddow about President Obama's call for closing tax loopholes and higher tax rates for the extremely rich, and his tough stand against Republicans.
Georgia Pardons Board Denies Clemency for Death Row Inmate
http://www.truth-out.org/georgia-pardons-board-denies-clemency-death-row-inmate/1316526590
Kim Severson, The New York Times News Service: "Troy Davis, whose death row case ignited an international campaign to save his life, has lost what appeared to be his last attempt to avoid death by lethal injection on Wednesday. Rejecting pleas by Mr. Davis's lawyers that shaky witness testimony and a lack of physical evidence presented enough doubt about his guilt to spare him death, the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles ruled on Tuesday morning that Mr. Davis, 42, should die for killing Mark MacPhail, an off-duty police officer, in a Savannah parking lot in 1989."
Targeting Muslims
http://www.truth-out.org/targeting-muslims/1314397655
Nancy Murray and Kade Crockford, Truthout and ACLU Massachusetts: "In August 2002, police were called to a home in Seminole, Florida, by a woman who said her husband had threatened to kill her. She invited them to conduct a search. They found a cache of weapons, including 20 live bombs, mines and more than 30 guns, among them semi-automatic weapons, 50-caliber machine guns and sniper rifles. There was also a list of targets - 50 worship centers across the state. Little attention outside of Florida was paid to the elaborate plan to bomb the Islamic Center of Pinellas County, target mosques and 'kill all rags' drawn up by Robert Jay Goldstein, a Tampa podiatrist. Goldstein was not referred to as a 'terrorist' in the limited national coverage and neither was there a mention of his religious background. Goldstein, who was not a Muslim, did not fit the frame."
On the News With Thom Hartmann: Department of Justice Claims Gov. Rick Perry Is in Violation of the Voting Rights Act, and More
http://www.truth-out.org/news-thom-hartmann-department-justice-claims-governor-rick-perry-violation-voting-rights-act/1316537
In today's On the News segment: Davis denied clemency by a Georgia paroles board today; the post-Reagan generation now has 37 percent of young families living in poverty; Don't Ask, Don't Tell repealed after 18 long years; Department of Justice claims Gov. Rick Perry is in violation of the Voting Rights Act; a Tea Partier has stepped forward in Ohio's eighth district to take John Boehner's Congressional seat in 2012; Fox and Google to host GOP debate; and more.
Obama Proposes a Bailout of Postal Service, Cutting Deliveries
http://www.truth-out.org/obama-proposes-bailout-postal-service-cutting-deliveries/1316524843
Steven Thomma, McClatchy Newspapers: "Warning of an imminent financial crisis, President Barack Obama on Monday proposed bailing out the United States Postal Service, urging that it be allowed to cut mail delivery to five days a week and raise the price of stamps. He also proposed allowing the service to get a $6.9 billion refund from an overfunded pension fund."
Don't Ask, Don't Tell Ends This Week With Celebrations, Revelations and Questions
http://www.truth-out.org/dont-ask-dont-tell-ends-week-celebrations-revelations-and-questions/1316524824
James Dao, The New York Times News Service: "The era of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the military's ban on openly gay service members, will come to an end on Tuesday. And while supporters of the ban continue to warn of impending problems, advocates for open service are planning a host of celebratory events, ranging from book releases to film openings to gay service members going public with their identities."
Paul Krugman | Following a Disaster, Disastrous Suggestions
http://www.truth-out.org/following-disaster-disastrous-suggestions/1316533039
Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: "Steve Landsburg, the author and economics professor at the University of Rochester, critiqued my recent critique of demands by Eric Cantor, a Republican congressman from Virginia and the House majority leader, that emergency relief in the United States in the wake of Hurricane Irene be offset by spending cuts elsewhere. But I think that he missed the point. On Aug. 31, Mr. Landsburg wrote on his blog: 'Krugman thinks this is silly, and proves his point with an appeal to the standard Ricardian theory of public finance.... if you've got to bear a cost, it's best to spread that cost out over as many activities as possible.'"
Thom Hartmann | Unequal Citizenship and Access to the Commons
http://www.truth-out.org/unequal-citizenship-and-access-commons/1316542409
Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Koehler Publishers: "There are resources and there are resources. For corporations, resources include raw materials, labor, the property and the equipment they use, the talents of the people they employ, and cash. For humans, resources include air, water, food, shelter, clothing, health care, and the means of exchange to ensure these. I remember growing up fifty-plus years ago in an America where an employer's responsibilities to their community were so well understood that bosses who laid off people were considered either evil or failures. There was a dramatic recalibration of this during the 1980s, as the word layoff was replaced with the more politically tolerable euphemism downsizing and then further euphemized to rightsizing. In England the same event is described much more directly: 'I was made redundant.'"
Rev. Jesse Jackson on Taxing the Rich, Occupy Wall Street Protest and Palestinian Statehood (Video)
http://www.truth-out.org/rev-jesse-jackson-taxing-rich-occupy-wall-street-protest-and-palestinian-statehood/1316538996
Amy Goodman, Democracy NOW!: "On Monday, President Obama proposed a new tax on millionaires as part of his plan to close the deficit and responded to opponents who have labeled his plan 'class warfare.' Republicans have vowed to defeat the tax, even as one in six Americans live in poverty. We speak with Rev. Jesse Jackson about how Obama's plan also includes cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. 'I would think, before we end up at that conclusion, we must go after where the money - where is the money?' Jackson says."
Why Hunger Is Still With Us
http://www.truth-out.org/why-hunger-still-us/1316524658
Raj Patel, The Nation: "Amid the joy of local, seasonal ingredients and tides of young people with dirt freshly lodged under their fingernails, it feels unkind to point to the bigger problems within the food system. But it's worth tempering an optimism of the will with a pessimism of the intellect. Despite the food movement's gains over the past decade, it's hard not to feel the latter outweighing the former.... Harvests remain strong, and people still go hungry. This isn't because of population growth - there's enough produced to feed everyone on a Small Planet's diet. But the economics of crop production have increasingly left concerns about human eating in the dust."
The Keystone Pipeline: Too Dirty for George W. Bush?
http://www.truth-out.org/keystone-pipeline-too-dirty-george-w-bush/1316526141
Brendan Smith and Jeremy Brecher, Labor Network for Sustainability: "The Keystone XL pipeline, recently approved by the US State Department and awaiting President Obama's declaration that it is in the 'national interest,' will carry oil that is too dirty for the US government to buy - under legislation signed by George W. Bush! In 2007, President Bush signed into law Section 526 of the Energy Independence and National Security Act of 2007. It prohibits the US government, which is the largest single fuel purchaser in the US, from using taxpayer dollars to purchase fuels that have a higher carbon footprint than conventional oil."
Thirty Days in Kabul
http://www.truth-out.org/thirty-days-kabul-or-afghanistan-seen-through-keyhole/1316023077
Ed Kinane, Truthout: "Kabul is a city of sandbags and nervous, armed men, both on foot and in big, shiny, urgently honking vehicles. In Kabul life is lived opaquely - behind thick metal doors and high walls topped with barbed wire. Approach the airport here and soldiers will have you out of your vehicle three times and patting you down before you even turn into the parking lot. Early on, we are told that, according to the Red Cross, the area is enduring the worse security situation in 30 years. Those with a stake in how things are dread the talked about departure of the US forces and their allies. (The US is quietly lobbying the Karzai government to agree to permanent US bases.) Some we meet prefer the devil they've come to know this past excruciating decade to other devils harder to predict, harder to identify."
The Big One Is Coming: Strikes Rattle California Hospitals
http://www.truth-out.org/big-one-coming-strikes-rattle-california-hospitals/1316439376
Carl Finamore, Talking Union: "The sudden release of stored energy could easily describe earthquakes, of which we are very familiar in California. But this week, tremors of a different sort will shake the state from north to south. The sudden release of pent up frustrations from more than 23,000 registered nurses at 34 Northern and Central California hospitals will explode to the surface in a one-day strike on Thursday, September 22. The work stoppage affects two of California's largest and most profitable hospital chains, Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente, as well as Children's Hospital Oakland."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES
Recently, the Benton Harbor City Council - governed under the authoritarian emergency financial manager appointed by Tea Party Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder - passed a resolution to honor the US Constitution the week of September 17. (http://www.wsjm.com/BH-Commissioners-Looking-To-Fight-Harris-On-Charte/10832948 )
The emergency financial manager for Benton Harbor declared, in the spring, that the Benton Harbor City Council could only do three things: call meetings to order, approve minutes and adjourn meetings. As a result, the state-appointed manager of Benton Harbor declared the city council resolution honoring the US Constitution as null and void.
As Rachel Maddow pointed out in a September 19 commentary, (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908//vp/44588010#44588010) there is a frightening irony in "elected officials not being allowed to honor the Constitution because they've been overruled by an appointed overseer who nobody voted for."
In April of 2011, BuzzFlash at Truthout wrote a commentary entitled "Tea Party Michigan Governor Rick Snyder Adopts Soviet-style Authoritarian Powers Over Michigan Cities." (http://blog.buzzflash.com/node/12610 )
Maybe the emergency financial manager for Benton Harbor will force the Benton Harbor City Council, chosen by the voters, to follow the Politburo books of rules and orders.

ing up fifty-plus years ago in an America where an employer's responsibilit=
ies to their community were so well understood that bosses who laid off peo=
ple were considered either evil or failures. There was a dramatic recalibra=
tion of this during the 1980s, as the word layoff was replaced with the mor=
e politically tolerable euphemism downsizing and then further euphemized to=
rightsizing. In England the same event is described much more directly: 'I=
was made redundant.'"<br />

Amy Goodman, Democracy NOW!: "On Monday, President Obama proposed a new tax=

opponents who have labeled his plan 'class warfare.' Republicans have vowed=

<font><strong>Why Hunger Is Still With Us</strong></font><br />
Raj Patel, The Nation: "Amid the joy of local, seasonal ingredients and tid=
es of young people with dirt freshly lodged under their fingernails, it fee=
ls unkind to point to the bigger problems within the food system. But it's =
worth tempering an optimism of the will with a pessimism of the intellect. =
Despite the food movement's gains over the past decade, it's hard not to fe=
el the latter outweighing the former.... Harvests remain strong, and people=
still go hungry. This isn't because of population growth - there's enough =
produced to feed everyone on a Small Planet's diet. But the economics of cr=
op production have increasingly left concerns about human eating in the dus=

<font><strong>Thirty Days in Kabul</strong></font><br />
Ed Kinane, Truthout: "Kabul is a city of sandbags and nervous, armed men, b=
oth on foot and in big, shiny, urgently honking vehicles. In Kabul life is =
lived opaquely - behind thick metal doors and high walls topped with barbed=
wire. Approach the airport here and soldiers will have you out of your veh=
icle three times and patting you down before you even turn into the parking=
lot. Early on, we are told that, according to the Red Cross, the area is e=
nduring the worse security situation in 30 years. Those with a stake in how=
things are dread the talked about departure of the US forces and their all=
ies. (The US is quietly lobbying the Karzai government to agree to permanen=

<p>The emergency financial manager for Benton Harbor declared, in the sprin=

<p>As Rachel Maddow pointed out in a <a href=3D"http://org2.democracyinacti=
