Seymour Hersh: Despite Intelligence Rejecting Iran as Nuclear Threat, US Co=
uld Be Headed for Iraq Redux
http://www.truthout.org/seymour-hersh-despite-intelligence-rejecting-iran-n=
uclear-threat-us-could-be-headed-iraq-redux/13073
Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, Democracy Now!: "In his latest article for T=
he New Yorker magazine, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Sey=
mour Hersh says the United States might attack Iran based on distorted esti=
mates of Iran's nuclear and military threat - just like it did with Saddam =
Hussein's government in Iraq. Hersh reveals that despite using Iranian info=
rmants and cutting-edge surveillance technology, U.S. officials have been u=
nable to find decisive evidence that Iran has been moving enriched uranium =
to an underground weapon-making center."
Past Trade Agreements Have Cut Jobs, Wages and Democracy
http://www.truthout.org/past-trade-agreements-have-cut-jobs-wages-and-democ=
racy/1307368870
Dave Johnson, Campaign for America's Future: "Our trade agreements have pit=
ted working people in countries that do not protect rights or people agains=
t the working people here who fought to win the protections of democracy. T=
he result has been devastating to our communities, our economy and our demo=
cracy. America is (was, anyway) a democracy governed by We, the People. As =
Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies remind us Americans fought and sacrificed =
to build and keep the protections and benefits that democracy offers. Those=
include good jobs with good wages, worker safety laws, rules preventing co=
mpanies from polluting, and so many other things that companies complain ma=
ke us less 'business-friendly.' But we got involved in 'trade' deals that l=
et countries get around democracy's protections, pitting employees here aga=
inst people who have no voice, no power and no money. You can see the resul=
ts all around us."

Activists Converge on Kansas Base, Demand Fair Trial for Manning
http://www.truthout.org/guilty-or-not-activists-demand-manning-be-freed-and=
-tried-fairly/1307366969
James Russell, Truthout: "Activists from across the country converged outsi=
de of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on Saturday to oppose the detainment and de=
mand the release, of Pfc. Bradley Manning, the 23-year-old accused by the f=
ederal government of sharing previously undisclosed documents to whistleblo=
wer web site WikiLeaks. The event is the first large-scale protest to be he=
ld outside of the base since he was transferred there from the US Marine Co=
rps Base in Quantico, Virginia, on April 20. The day-long rally, march and =
protest featured a variety of speakers, including GI resisters, anti-war ac=
tivists and veterans, as well as members of the Bradley Manning Support Net=
work, which helped organize the event with the local chapter of Veterans fo=
r Peace and other organizations. For activists at the protest, Manning has =
become both a symbol of all that is right with whistleblowing and all that =
is wrong with the federal government."
Dean Baker | Political Advice to Republicans on Medicare
http://www.truthout.org/political-advice-republicans-medicare/1307368697
Dean Baker, Truthout: "The Republicans are very upset that their vote for R=
epresentative Ryan's plan to end Medicare is being used against them. The l=
oss of an upstate New York Congressional seat that they held for 50 years w=
as quite a shock. Furthermore, groups are already using this vote in attack=
ads around the country to threaten incumbents. This could be really bad ne=
ws for their election prospects in 2012 since Medicare is a hugely popular =
program. Polls consistently show that the program has enormous public suppo=
rt among all political and demographic groups. Not only do Democrats and in=
dependents overwhelmingly support the Medicare program, even Republicans ov=
erwhelmingly approve of Medicare."
The Global Debt Crisis: How We Got in It and How to Get Out
http://www.truthout.org/global-debt-crisis-how-we-got-it-and-how-get-out/13=
07386310
Ellen Brown, Truthout: "Contrary to popular belief, most of our money today=
is not created by governments. It is created by private banks as loans. Th=
e private system of money creation has grown so powerful over the centuries=
that it has come to dominate governments globally. The system, however, co=
ntains the seeds of its own destruction. The source of its power is also a =
fatal design flaw. The flaw is that banks advance 'bank credit' that must b=
e paid back with interest, continually requiring more money to be repaid th=
an was created as loans; and the only way to get additional money from the =
private banking system is to take out yet more loans, at interest. The syst=
em is, in effect, a pyramid scheme. When the banks run out of borrowers to =
support the pyramid, it must collapse; and we are nearing that point today.=
There are more sustainable ways to run a banking and credit system."
The Global Energy Crisis Deepens: Three Energy Developments That Are Changi=
ng Your Life
http://www.truthout.org/global-energy-crisis-deepens-three-energy-developme=
nts-are-changing-your-life/1307371438
Michael T. Klare, TomDispatch: "Here's one simple fact without which our de=
epening energy crisis makes no sense: the world economy is structured in su=
ch a way that standing still in energy production is not an option. In orde=
r to satisfy the staggering needs of older industrial powers like the Unite=
d States along with the voracious thirst of rising powers like China, globa=
l energy must grow substantially every year. According to the projections o=
f the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), world energy output, based on 2007 l=
evels, must rise 29% to 640 quadrillion British thermal units by 2025 to me=
et anticipated demand. Even if usage grows somewhat more slowly than projec=
ted, any failure to satisfy the world's requirements produces a perception =
of scarcity, which also means rising fuel prices. These are precisely the c=
onditions we see today and should expect for the indefinite future."

The Americans for Prosperity Foundation (APF) will launch a campaign this w=
eek of rallies and media movements to promote the idea that the Obama admin=
istration's energy regulation is causing the increasing numbers at the pump=

Five American Soldiers Are Killed in Iraq
http://www.truthout.org/5-american-soldiers-are-killed-iraq/1307366041
Jack Healy and Michael S. Schmidt, New York Times News Service: "Five Ameri=
can soldiers were killed Monday in one of the deadliest days in two years f=
or the American military in Iraq, a day that underscored the continuing thr=
eats American troops face as they prepare to withdraw from the country. Uni=
ted States officials provided few details, saying only that five service me=
mbers had been killed in an attack in central Iraq. But an Iraqi security o=
fficial said they were killed after three rockets launched from a Kia picku=
p truck struck an American base in eastern Baghdad. There were no immediate=
claims of responsibility. The toll was unusual at a time when American for=
ces have largely pulled back behind the high concrete curtains of their bas=
es. But American military officials have been bracing for an increase in at=
tacks as militants use violence to inject themselves into the fiercely poli=
ticized debate over whether Iraq should ask American forces to stay after t=
he end of the year."
General Keane Keen on Iran Attack
http://www.truthout.org/gen-keane-keen-iran-attack/1307391384
Ray McGovern, Consortium News: "Celebrating a reunion with close friends of=
Fordham College (class of 1961) on a perfect June day in New York should b=
e a time of little or no stress. So I should have avoided a long lecture by=
a retired four-star general from the class of 1966, Jack Keane. Keane, now=
on Fordham University's Board of Trustees, has been the go-to general for =
the neoconservatives in recent years. He said he was speaking to us before =
catching a flight to Europe where he would lobby leaders of the 41 NATO cou=
ntries who, except for three, have been 'unwilling to ask their people to s=
acrifice' in places like Afghanistan. (By all indications, Keane has appare=
ntly given no thought to the possibility that the Europeans have been far q=
uicker to understand that the war in Afghanistan - aka Vietnamistan - is a =
fool's errand.)"
Blood in the Amazon: Brazilian Activists Murdered as Deforestation Increase=
s
http://www.truthout.org/blood-amazon-brazilian-activists-murdered-deforesta=
tion-increases/1306955356
Benjamin Dangl, Truthout: "Early in the morning on May 24, in the northern =
Brazilian Amazon, Jose Claudio Ribeiro da Silva and his wife Maria do Espir=
ito Santo da Silva got onto a motorcycle near the nature reserve they had w=
orked on for over two decades. As the couple rode past the jungle they dedi=
cated their lives to protecting, gunmen hiding near a bridge opened fire, k=
illing them both. Brazilian law enforcement officials said that the killing=
appeared to be the work of hired gunmen, due to the fact that an ear was c=
ut off each of the victims. This is often done to prove to whoever paid for=
the killings that the job was carried out. The murder took place the same =
day the Brazilian Congress passed a change to the forestry code that would =
allow agribusinesses and ranchers to clear even more land in the Amazon jun=
gle. Deforestation rose 27 percent from August 2010 to April 2011, largely =
due to soybean plantations. That number will likely rise again if the chang=
es to the forestry code are passed by the Senate."
The Ongoing Crisis and Liberal Blindness
http://www.truthout.org/ongoing-crisis-and-liberal-blindness/1307391273
Richard D. Wolff, Richard D. Wolff's Blog: "The double dip of this crisis i=
s upon us. The latest data agree: the housing market has been in full doubl=
e-dip mode for five months as home prices keep declining. The foreclosure d=
isaster keeps increasing the combination of homeless families and empty hom=
es. Think capitalist efficiency. Unemployment rose back above 9 % again. Th=
e average length of unemployment is now 39.7 weeks, the longest since these=
records began in 1948. Investments by businesses are decelerating and gove=
rnments keep dropping workers. Over 20 million workers are unemployed or un=
deremployed. Over a quarter of the nation's productive capacity remains unu=
tilized, gathering rust and dust. Annual output of $1 trillion is lost by w=
asting these resources. Think capitalist efficiency again."
Steeper Pullout Raised as Option for Afghanistan
http://www.truthout.org/steeper-pullout-raised-option-afghanistan/130736683=
3
David E. Sanger, Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker, New York Times News Service=
: "President Obama's national security team is contemplating troop reductio=
ns in Afghanistan that would be steeper than those discussed even a few wee=
ks ago, with some officials arguing that such a change is justified by the =
rising cost of the war and the death of Osama bin Laden, which they called =
new 'strategic considerations.' These new considerations, along with a desi=
re to find new ways to press the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, to get mor=
e of his forces to take the lead, are combining to create a counterweight t=
o an approach favored by the departing secretary of defense, Robert M. Gate=
s, and top military commanders in the field."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES =20
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie had an excellent helicopter adventure on the=
taxpayer's dime, until he reluctantly forked over the expense of the fligh=
t to his son's baseball game.
As it turns out, Christie used the state helicopter for other personal trip=
s, and news organizations are still trying to figure out just how much New =
Jersey residents paid for the governor's non-state related flying. (http://=
gothamist.com/2011/06/04/chris_christie_247_governor_pays_nj.php)
Christie, known as an outsize figure who isn't timid about profane attacks =
on his opponents, called a New Jersey state assemblywoman a "jerk" for crit=
icizing the pro-austerity governor's use of the state helicopter (http://ww=
w.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2011/06/nj-gov-christie-calls-chopper=
gate-critic-a-jerk) :
Christie lashed out at Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle after=
she joined the chorus criticizing him for using state police choppers to g=
et to his son's high school baseball games.
What really got under Christie's skin was when Vainieri Huttle pointed out =
that he left during the fifth inning to meet with Iowa businessmen trying t=
o get him to run for president.
"She should really be embarrassed at what a jerk she is," Christie said sho=
rtly after he caved to public pressure and agreed to reimburse the state fo=
r the chopper rides.
Interestingly, some Republicans are trying to create a "Christie for presid=
ent" boomlet.(http://www.rollcall.com/news/south_carolina_chris_christie_pr=
esident_movement-206185-1.html?ET=3Drollcall:e10381:80095390a:&st=3Demail&p=
os=3Depol )
You've got to wonder how a governor cutting back on those in dire need in h=
is state can be so flippant about indulging himself with personal helicopte=
r rides at the expense of state residents.
When will all these pro-austerity government officials start cutting back o=
n their perks?

ut off each of the victims.
That number will likely rise again if the chang=
es to the forestry code are passed by the Senate."<br />

Think capitalist efficiency again." <br />

<font><strong>Steeper Pullout Raised as Option for Afghanistan</strong></fo=

Gate=
s, and top military commanders in the field." <br />

<p>New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie had an excellent helicopter adventure on =
the taxpayer's dime, until he reluctantly forked over the expense of the fl=
ight to his son's baseball game.</p>
<p>As it turns out, Christie used the state helicopter for other personal t=
rips, and news organizations are still trying to figure out just <a href=3D=

<p>Christie, known as an outsize figure who isn't timid about <a href=3D"ht=

on his opponents</font></a>, called a New Jersey state assemblywoman a "jer=
k" for criticizing the pro-austerity governor's use of the state helicopter=
:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Christie lashed out at Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle after she j=
oined the chorus criticizing him for using state police choppers to get to =
his son's high school baseball games.</p>
<p>What really got under Christie's skin was when Vainieri Huttle pointed o=
ut that he left during the fifth inning to meet with Iowa businessmen tryin=
g to get him to run for president.</p>
<p>"She should really be embarrassed at what a jerk she is," Christie said =
shortly after he caved to public pressure and agreed to reimburse the state=
for the chopper rides.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Interestingly, some Republicans are trying to create a <a href=3D"http:/=

<p>You've got to wonder how a governor cutting back on those in dire need i=
n his state can be so flippant about indulging himself with personal helico=

<p>When will all these pro-austerity government officials start cutting bac=
