A couple of things moved forward a bit this morning.

Scopus Consulting Status:
--------------------------
First of all, I spoke with John Howe our local Scopus consulting contact.
His contact info is jhowe@scopus.com, 270-0696.

- Did we get shipped all the right pieces of software? We appear to be
missing ScopusWorks and Mac client software. He will check into this.

- In future, can we get server upgrades on 8 mm tape rather than 1/4 inch?
He will also check into this.

- Should we install server software, or is this something the Scopus
consultants will/would prefer to do when they arrive? Either way is fine.
If Scopus consultants do it, they will charge us for that time above what
we have for our consulting agreement so far.

- Did he have any questions/concerns regarding our counter proposal for
Scopus' consulting services? He wanted to know what might have changed
since our initial conversation with him and Joan. I explained that Steven
Wade (Neiterman) had joined the effort as a full-time technical project
manager. This seemed to put him at ease. He had no real questions
regarding the rest of our counter, so I am assuming it's a go.

- When can we expect to see Scopus consultants on-site? He originally
suggested May 6. I indicated that that was a bit farther out than we were
hoping for. He then came back with April 22. This sounds much better. He
needed to see if he could free up some resources to start this early -
he'll be getting back to Steve and me as soon as he has checked on this.

This arrangement would start out with a Business Analyst on site here for
the first two weeks, with an implementor coming and going as needed. After
that, the business analyst disappears and the implementor comes on board
for a fairly consistent chunk of time.

Production Server Configuration Status:
---------------------------------------
Meeting this morning with Peter Kelley, Jafar Hosseinzadeh, Steve and myself.

- Peter hadn't yet been able to reach Mel Rosenberg at Scopus to discuss
Scopus' server recommendations. We do have a direct number for him now
510-597-5879.

- We pretty much ruled out the newer Ultra SPARC's because they run only
Solaris 2.5.1 and are not binary compatible with earlier versions such as
2.4. Peter will still have a conversation with Mel regarding Scopus'
experience if any running on 2.5. We would also need to verify with
someone from the database group whether Oracle would run on a 2.5 machine.
Peter will be talking with Carol LeClair.

- Steve would prefer our going with a Solaris 2.4 machine to give us AFS.

- Though we don't need a fully Athenized server, we will need/want AFS and
Kerberos. Peter will talk with Mike B. and Bill Cattey regarding the
Athena pieces we would want to run on this server. Steve will speak with
Tom Copetto who has more related server experience with the PO servers.

- We're probably looking at a higher end SPARC 20 with a dual processor.

- Normal delivery delays are in the order of 3-5 weeks with the SPARC 20
coming in at closer to the 5 week mark. Jafar can circumvent some of this
delay for "mission critical" machines. This machine is probably in the
mission critical category, and we mentioned a desire to get it in closer to
2 weeks rather than 5.

- Kathy Allen had said something about being out of the office on Friday.
Don't know if she's back in on Monday or not. Barbara will check on
Kathy's and JDB's schedules next week so that we'll know what to expect in
terms of getting signed reqs.

- Once we have spec'd out our desired machine, Jafar can get the ball
rolling with or without a signed req from us. He will need to request a
formal quotation from Sun.

- Jafar reminded us of another on-going cost in the form of
warrantee/maintenance on the machine itself. We can talk with Debbie Sears
regarding pricing on either Sun or Polaris service contracts.

- For Solaris software we will get something called "jump start" which is
not the full implementation of 2.4. If we wanted to add-on additional
standard Sun stuff we could contract with Linda's group for Sun Software
Library pieces. We believe the only additional piece we might need would
be Tcl

- Jafar is out on Tuesday, but if we can get our specs to him by Monday, he
can get the ball rolling.

- Barbara will check in on Connie to see where things stand on the
consulting contract language.
