Where to begin training for SAP R/3 and ABAP

As a veteran DOS programmer for a fortune 50 company, I am ready to
move into a new programming environment.
It appears that SAP R/3 and ABAP is a very hot market right now, and
likely to stay around.
I have the SAP education guide, but with so many choices it's
difficult to know where to start.
My background is systems level programming of Traffic Logistics
(Volume Routing, Freight Audit, Claims Management, Electronic Billing,
Freight Rating), Inventory Control (Purchase orders, Order Entry,
Receiving), EDI (have written native 3020 110, 210, 810, 850, 855, 856
and 997) and POS.
I have a strong background in building interfaces between diverse
platforms.
I have programmed in C, C++, xBase and many other languages.
Where should I start?
Where can I expect to be hired after initial training.
What is the low end of the SAP R/3 ABAP salary spectrum?
