The following is a brief article regarding number assignments. It is being
posted for the benefit of those interested readers as an educational=
 document
pertaining to SAP.

NUMBER ASSIGNMENT=20
By Kimberly Blois, Senior SD/MM Consultant, Realtime USA

Number assignment is the association of numbers to objects (e.g. customers,
materials). There are two types of number ranges: internal-number assigned
automatically by the system, and external-number assigned manually by the
user. Number ranges are defined at the client level. Number assignments
are unique and need to be defined in the SAP system for customer and
material master records.

If both internal and external number assignment are required, it is
necessary to define two separate number ranges. Additionally, it is
possible to have different number ranges for the customer master according
to the account group chosen and for the material master according to the
material type chosen.

SAP recommends the use of internal number assignment. This reduces the
possibility of duplicate or intelligent numbering. The system will use the
next available number in the number range. The search functionality, by way
of match codes, enables users to search across the customer or material
master records by specifying a combination of search criteria (e.g. postal
code, phone number, customer account group etc.). Match codes virtually
eliminates the need for 'intelligent' numbering. Unique and standardized
customer and material numbers for all of a business' divisions are possible
while incorporating the need for differentiation through different number
ranges.

Key points to remember:

1. Define a number range for every customer account group and material type.
2. Only one number range may exist for the customer and one for the=
 material.
3. The number assigned to the customer and material, upon creation of each,
is determined by the number range defined by the customer account group and
material type.
4. Match code search functionality eliminates the need for 'intelligent=92
numbering.

ADVANTAGES OF MULTIPLE NUMBER RANGES:

=B7 Grouping of several account groups of material types using one number=
 range.
=B7 It is possible to allow both internal and external number assignment for
a material type or account group. Two number ranges would be valid for one
material type or one account group. Two number ranges would be valid for
one material type or one account group. A user procedure must be defined to
determine how the numbering is to be used.
=B7 When a customer or material is created, the system immediately knows the
number is assigned internally or externally. When assigned internally, the
system will prompt for the next number in sequence. If assigned externally,
the system immediately knows if the number is valid.
