Hm, there is a book about ABAP (ABAP OO) which includes a SAP Basis 
system (no financials, human resources etc. just the Admin stuff and the 
development stuff) which can be used for trying the first ABAP programs. 
Afaik it can be installed on a home PC...but I don't know whether it's 
available in english as well...
