I am in the process of writing a manuscript which uses some functions that
have been posted on this discussion list. I was wondering how they should
be properly cited. This involves a number of important points:
1) the work of people who (generously) post these functions must be properly
acknowledged. If not, people will stop contributing, and this would be a shame.
2) The full name and address of contributors is not always given. In such
cases, we do not even know the identity of the contributor.
3) Even when the full name is given, this is no assurance that the name is
correct.

Most importantly (for me), I must publish the function in the manuscript if
it is not already published (in print - editors are not likely to accept an
archive in cyberspace). This can cause some obvious problems with priority
of publication. We must find some way of protecting the intellectual
property of contributors without preventing the free and rapid exchange of
information that now occurs on this list.
Any ideas?
