Alan Zaslavsky (and others) have made some excellent points about
drivers. I would use fig myself it it weren't for two problems:
(1) the resolution is only 80dpi, which doesn't work well for
step functions with lots of little steps, for example, and
(2) fig doesn't handle Y-axis labels that are rotated (drawn along
the Y-axis).
