My thanks to the ever-informative Prof. Ripley for providing just the right
pointers needed to tap into info on the windows help system. More
information about Windows help files, esp. the old rtf-based vs. new
html-based help systems alluded to below, can be found at a delightful web

It is old technology, now. (Says he having spent the afternoon building
Compiled HTML Help aka .chm help files.)
The V&R2 programming complements (on-line, via
http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/MASS) have details of how to do this, and I
have a zip file spwinhlp of routines (referenced there) of Perl routines to
convert text and Unix S-PLUS help files. That is how the libraries in my
SWin collection were converted. It even tells you where to find an old
version of the winhelp compiler, but use hcrtf if you have a copy (it is
_much_ faster on NT).
