this is a choice also faced by people doing quantitative work in political
science -- they are largely trained in an econometric tradition. I wrote
a piece comparing Splus and GAUSS for _The Political Methodologist_ (the
quarterly newsletter of the political methodology section of the American
Political Science Association) -- the comparison is now a little dated
(1994), and I don't think OX existed then and I am less scared of C than I
used to be, but the general arguments still hold true --- the piece is
