[S] reading files a portion at a time

Does anyone know how I can read a file a portion at a time. As an example:
suppose I have a file of 100 numbers. I want to read 50 of these, do some
operations, and then read the remaining 50.
I realize that this can be done by reading the whole thing in, but this is
just an example. My real application has a huge file and it can't be read into
memory (nor do I think it is meaningful when I am using disjoint portions at
a time).
Thanks to all those who responded to my earlier request on gif saving in unix:
I am trying the suggestions out and will post a summary after their successful
completion. (Actually this question arises from there.)
