OSF Announces the General Availability of DCE 1.1
Major enhancements to security, administration and
                 internationalization

NEWTON, MA, November 1, 1994 -- The Open Software
Foundation today announced the general availability of
Release 1.1 of the Distributed Computing Environment
(DCE). This release includes,

%	Major new enhancements to system administration,
     including a consolidated interface for
administration throughout DCE, plus a capability
allowing for the remote start-up and shut-down of
     remote services;

%	Enhancements to security, including a Generic
Security Service API (GSSAPI) which allows non-RPC
based systems to take advantage of DCE security,
     extended registry attributes allowing various
proprietary systems to be registered in the DCE
security registry, as well as security delegation
     and auditing capabilities;

%	Enhancements to internationalization which include
standardized POSIX and X/Open interfaces and
provide character code set interoperability and

%	General performance enhancements.

"Most leading system vendors have either announced or
are currently shipping DCE on all their major computer
platforms, including Unix, MVS, Windows, HP-UX, Alpha
NT, VMS, and OS/2," said Joe Maloney, DCE Business Area
Manager. "The DCE 1.1 release provides expanded
security, administrative and internationalization
capabilities, combined with dramatically lower client
pricing and improved performance. There is simply
nothing else available in the distributed computing
marketplace that provides the interoperability of DCE."

"OSF's delivery of DCE release 1.1 is a significant step
forward for open client/server computing," said Art
Olbert, Director, LAN Systems IBM Personal Software
Products. "This release adds mission-critical
functions, such as security accounting and a wider
security envelope to DCE. DCE now meets even more
customer requirements for distributed computing whether
at the individual, workgroup or enterprise level. IBM
intends to support and exploit DCE 1.1's technology and
features as part of IBM's Open Blueprint support for
open distributed computing solutions."

"Hewlett-Packard (HP) promotes DCE because it's the best
solution for users who want to implement a secure,
interoperable and comprehensive distributed-computing
infrastructure," said Fred A. Luiz, General Manager,
HP's Open Systems Software Division. "HP contributed
the improved security and performance features in DCE
1.1 and we will incorporate all elements of DCE 1.1 into
the next release of the DCE product family." Luiz
continued by saying, "HP practices what it preaches when
it comes to DCE. We use DCE internally for new
client/server developments and significant enhancements
to existing programs."

"Transarc is very excited about the improved
administrative infrastructure and user interface, as
well as the higher level of security in the new DCE 1.1,
and considers the DCE the most critical component of any
distributed, large-scale computing environment," said
Dr. Alfred Spector, President and CEO, of the Transarc
Corporation. "Transarc Corporation has been an ardent
supporter of the DCE since we helped develop the
specifications for the DCE technology with the OSF in
1989. Based on unanimous vendor support and rapidly
growing customer deployment, it is clear the DCE has
reached the critical mass necessary to position it as
the only infrastructure you need to build successful
large-scale client/server applications," continued
Spector.

"[OSF's] DCE release 1.1 is vital to Gradient's next
generation of products," said Len Halio, President & CEO
of Gradient Technologies. "The enhanced functionality
of release 1.1, such as credentials delegation, provides
a major step forward that will permit our deployment of
high volume products, such as Gradient's NetWare
Gateway, that are critical to the widespread use of
DCE."

"As a founding member of the Open Software Foundation,
and the provider of many of the DCE components, Digital
is happy to participate in this announcement," said Don
Harbert, Vice President UNIX Business Segment at Digital
Equipment Corporation. "All of the new capabilities in
DCE release 1.1 will help establish it as a mature
foundation on which to build a multi-vendor enterprise
infrastructure. DCE release 1.1 will be an integral
part of Digital's distributed computing plans."

The widely adopted DCE technology is a comprehensive,
integrated set of services that supports the
development, use and maintenance of distributed
applications. DCE is designed to assist end users and
software developers in creating a vendor neutral
enterprise-wide computing environment -- one that
combines the hardware and software of many vendors. To
accommodate the growing demand for DCE on the desktop,
client pricing for DCE was reduced in June to encourage
widespread adoption.

End User Forum Activity
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

OSF End User Forum Update

A significant event in the past month was the End User
Forum session at SuperSIG Week, with approximately 60
attendees. One of the topics discussed involved a
coordinated requirements process with X/Open users.
After several meetings with X/Open participants, a white
paper is being produced that will outline a proposed
structure for requirements gathering and dissemination.

Bill Estrem of 3M discussed his experiences as the end
user representative on the DCE 1.2 Project Steering
Committee. As expected, it took a lot of time,
approximately 10 hours/week for Bill over the past
several months. Bill's efforts have been greatly
appreciated by the vendors, OSF staff, and particularly
the end users for whom he has been a strong advocate.
One of Bill's recommendations is that work begin soon on
drafting a user view white paper on the feature list for
a potential DCE 1.3. Others echoed the view that white
papers could be produced for a series of anticipated
technology projects within OSF. This would be a more
proactive approach than we have with the current and
pending projects in OSF.

A significant amount of time was spent discussing the
implications of the Object Management Group's
deliberations over the Common Object Request Broker
Architecture interoperability efforts (CORBA 2.0). It
was recommended that users review the available
materials and make their needs known to the vendor
members of OMG.

Also discussed at the Forum were various ways of
enhancing the benefits of membership in OSF. These
suggestions were shared with OSF staff and a follow up
discussion will be held to review the potential for
implementing the ideas, which included regular
teleconferences on OSF status with David Tory and his
staff, greater use of the Internet and the World Wide
Web for disseminating OSF information, and a "new
members packet" with all one needs to know about OSF
activities, etc. Further suggestions were offered for
the OSF member meeting, which runs May 31 through June 2
1995 in Boston. A "call for presentations" was proposed
for an end user track on open systems success stories.

The next End User Forum event will take place during
UniForum in Dallas (the week of March 13 1995). Stay
tuned for more details.

For further information about the OSF End User Forum,

DCE at SuperSIG

This year's SuperSIG evidenced once again that the
momentum behind DCE is continually building. There were
more than 300 members registered for the event who
engaged in interactive sessions with DCE developers,
product managers, ISVs, and end users. DCE/DME
workgroup topics included: SVR4, Business, Quality, DFS,
Naming, OO, Deployment, DB, L10N, I18N, Management,
Performance, and Security. Among the highlights of the
meeting included the DCE 1.2 content review led by Joe
Pato from Hewlett-Packard and the Windows NT/DCE
strategy presentation by Paul Leach of Microsoft.

End user attendance was at an all time high, and there
was considerable interest in end user presentations at
the Deployment working group. OSF distributed a
sampling of DCE End User Profiles at the SIG, which is
available on line through OSF's web server:
http://www.osf.org:8001 or through a request to OSF
Direct Channels at direct@osf.org.

DCE Product Catalog Revision

The DCE product catalog serves as a comprehensive
listing of the available DCE products, applications and
services. It contains product descriptions,
availability, supported platforms and contact
information so that users can gain easy access to
vendors' DCE resources. The next revision of the
catalog will be released on November 29. Copies of the
catalog may be obtained by contacting OSF Direct
Channels at direct@osf.org or 617-621-7300. To add your
offerings to the catalog, send information to Courtney
Grey, grey@osf.org with "Product Catalog" in the subject
line
for expedient processing.

DCE 1.1 Available Now

At the SuperSIG meeting in Newton, MA, OSF announced the
general availability of DCE 1.1. This release features
major enhancements in system administration, security,
and internationalization, as well as many performance
improvements. The release meets important market
requirements set by member end users, ISVs, and systems
vendors as part of the SIG process.

Over the past year, major system vendors and users
participated in the DCE 1.1 Beta program to gain access
to this code and provide feedback to DCE development.
Participation in the Beta program has helped vendors
accelerate the development cycle for products based
on DCE 1.1. As a result, users will start seeing DCE 1.1
functionality released in vendor products in mid-1995.

Congratulations to all that helped make this release a
success.

To license DCE 1.1 source code, please contact OSF
Direct Channels at 617-621-7300 or email direct@osf.org.

The World-Wide Web: Changing the Future

Speaking before an audience of 300 CIOs from Fortune 500
organizations attending a recent Business Week
Conference, Ira Goldstein, Vice President of OSF's
Research Institute, talked about the end of publishing
as we know it. Goldstein's comments focused on the move
from desktop publishing to worldwide publishing now
available because of the growth of the World-Wide
Web(WWW or Web) and the easy-to-use Mosaic
software.

Goldstein explained the four waves of Web growth he
sees. In the first wave, the Web was used primarily by
scientists, educators, and government as a means of
collaborating about their research efforts. The second
wave produced interest by advertisers looking for lower-
cost alternatives for promoting their messages.
Commerce on the Web, the third wave in the Web's growth,
will increase pressure for better security and state-of-
the-art access control for information and services
offered via the Web. The security and access control
features in OSF's DCE are a natural technology fit for
these requirements. Goldstein predicts that the fourth
wave will produce a seamless computer desktop where a
user can publish to audiences inside or outside an
organization, receive and send electronic mail, and
search for information or shop for goods and services,
around the clock, from any location around the world.

Two WWW Conferences in 1995: Darmstadt, Germany and
Boston, MA.

for two 1995 WWW conferences. The first, called
the Third International World-Wide Web Conference:
Technology, Tools and Applications, will be held April
10-14 in Darmstadt, Germany. Proposals for papers,
tutorials, workshops, demonstrations, and sponsorship
are now being accepted. Early conference registration
begins December 15, and the advance program will be
available February 15. Access to on-line registration
information and the latest conference updates are
available at URL: http://www.igd.fhg.de/www95.html, or

How to get ANDF Information and Documentation

There is now an ANDF home page located on the OSF RI
World Wide Web server at URL:
http://riwww.osf.org:8001/ri/andf.papers/ANDF_intro.html

Here you will find a brief overview of ANDF, along with
pointers to a collection of ANDF-related papers which
may be either viewed on-line or printed. All of the
papers from the "ANDF Technology Collected Papers"
series, currently four volumes, are contained on the
server.

For those who are not Mosaic users, the ANDF papers may
also be obtained from the OSF RI anonymous FTP server
(ftp:riftp.osf.org) in the directory
pub/andf_coll_papers. Requests for ANDF information may
be sent to andf-tech-request@osf.org.

ANDF Research Kit

The ANDF Research Kit released earlier this year
contains both the TDF technology from (Defense Research
Agency) DRA and the GANDF technology developed by the
OSF RI. The GANDF technology is a family of ANDF
installers which utilize the GCC code generators. The
Kit contains the C Producer and a collection of
installers for a variety of target
platforms.

The purpose of the ANDF Research kit is to understand
the use of the ANDF technology:

  a. for software distribution (the original ANDF
     objective)

  b. for developing and testing portable software (the
ANDF technology requires conformance to API
specifications, so it also serves as a good
     portability checker)

  c. as a compiler kit (a baseline for developing a
     compiler family).

Due to the proprietary nature of this software, an ANDF
Cooperative Research Agreement must be signed prior to
receiving the software. The ANDF Cooperative Research
Agreement is available electronically via the Web or
from the OSF RI anonymous FTP server: The Web URL is:

http://riwww.osf.org:8001/ri/andf.papers/ANDF_intro.html

Access the OSF RI anonymous FTP server at
ftp:riftp.osf.org and go to the pub/andf sub-directory.
Send completed agreements, including the questions in
Appendix B, to:

  ANDF License Administrator
  OSF Research Institute
  11 Cambridge Center
  Cambridge, MA 02142

Pricing for the ANDF Research Kit is based on
organization type. The Kit is for non-commercial use
only. Fees are principally to offset the cost of
preparation and distribution of the kit materials, plus
the administration of the ANDF Cooperative Research
Agreements.

Pricing is as follows:
    OSF Members: $ 500.00
    Non-Members: $1000.00
    Universities: $ 200.00

A freely distributable subset of the ANDF Kit (Driver,
Linker, and GANDF installers) is also available via
anonymous FTP. No DRA licensed code is included in this
subset, so no Cooperative Research Agreement is
required. This subset allows users to experiment with
installing applications distributed in ANDF, such as
Mosaic, which will also be available via anonymous FTP.
Other applications may be posted from time to time.
Their availability will be announced in the ANDF home
page.

DCE/MAN SIG

SuperSIG Week Meeting Overview

The meeting of the DCE/MAN SIG was held on October 31
and November 1 during OSF's SuperSIG Week at the Newton
Marriott Hotel. The following is a summary of the SIG
meeting plenary session held on October 31.

There were approximately 258 attendees with the
following category percentage break down:

        36% - System vendors
         6% - ISVs
        30% - End users
        19% - OSF
         9% - Consultants

An observation and challenge for the DCE/MAN SIG: To
focus on getting better representation from the ISV
community to attend these meetings. While this is
everyone's responsibility, more help is needed by the
system vendors, and the end users. Encourage your
software partners/suppliers to attend these DCE
meetings. We need them to get the DCE `religion' if we
are to see their products ported and interfaced to the
DCE. No better place to get a reading on the DCE market
than at one of our meetings.

1. DCE Update (Joe Maloney)

   * Focus of DCE 1.1 (Consolidated Admin, Security
     Enhancements, I18N)
   * Pricing Focus: promote deployment, facilitate
     bundling, growing market for tools/apps
   * New collateral available
   * DCE Developers Conference = 700 participants
     3 more planned for 1995: 2 in US , 1 in Europe
   * New Educational courses for DCE 1.1

2. 1.1 DCE Update (Maryanne Talpey)

   * It's done -- electronically available Nov 15
contact OSF Direct Channels at 617-621-7300

3. DCE OMG Technical Update

There was a presentation by Peter de Jong (HP) and Dave
Hartspan (DEC) regarding the DCE-CIOP proposal to OMG.
For those not aware of this issue see the recent
postings to sig-dce@osf.org as space doesn't permit a
detailed description here. The bottom line is that a
vote is now in progress to adopt a non-DCE standard for
CORBA V2 interoperability. Attendees decided to
organize a special BOF to plan and discuss organizing
support for the DCE-CIOP proposal and more
specifically to defeat the current vote to accept the
non-DCE compliant proposal. Contact any of the
following for further information:

Peter de Jong -- HP 508-436-5372
        Dave Hartspan -- DEC
Reilly Hayes -- Merrill Lynch 212-236-9536

4. DCE 1.2 Technical Update (Scott Wang)

Scott gave us an update on the state of the DCE PST.
Since a detailed review of the technical content of DCE
1.2 (RFC 63) was scheduled for Tuesday, Scott focused on
the process discussion.

5. PST Roundtable: Discussion on Openness (PSC members)

Representatives of the DCE PST were part of a panel
discussion on the PST process that specifically
addressed the need for a more open process that involves
active participation of the DCE community at large.

6. MICROSOFT TALK (Paul Leach)

Paul is Distributed Broadband Systems Architect and has
responsibility for the distributed object infrastructure
that will be used for Microsoft's work to support the
information highway. His presentation focused on
Microsoft and the DCE, and the way Microsoft has based
their object model on the DCE.

7. WORKING GROUP MEETINGS

The following groups met:
        Working groups
               Quality, DFS, DCE Naming, Deployment,
               Business, Performance, and Object-

UEC SIG

Representatives from a multitude of companies joined OSF
during SuperSig week to attend a CDE PST presentation
put on by the CDE PST authoring group. As part of the
PST development and approval process, draft PST
contents were presented to the OSF membership for review
and comment.

The CDE/Motif Next PST Authoring Group met the week of
November 7th to review all of the input obtained from
this meeting. Companies attending the SuperSig PST
review were given a questionnaire to complete and return
to OSF. Most companies were able to provide their
feedback by the end of the day. If you attended the
SuperSig review of the CDE/Motif Next PST and have not
yet returned your questionnaire, please do so
immediately by faxing to 617-621-0584 attention of
Darrell Crow.

Since the SuperSig was attended primarily by US based
representatives, OSF Authoring Group representatives
will be contacting our international members for a
review of this PST. If you haven't been contacted and
would like to provide your company's input, please send
email to crow@osf.org or burrage@osf.org immediately.
This PST is currently
being prepared for presentation to the OSF Board of
Directors.

The second day of the meeting was used to discuss the
information from the prior day and to determine the
direction of this SIG. Since the technology scope has
widened from a User Environment to a Desktop
environment, aside from very beneficial discussions on
the CDE/Motif PST review topics, this SIG is considering
disbanding and being re-constituted as a Desktop Special
Interest Group. If this would be of interest to you or
your company, please send email to crow@osf.org.

Security SIG

The OSF Security SIG met for 2 1/2 days during the
recently completed OSF SuperSIG Week event. The agenda
for the meeting included: a review of the current DCE
1.2 plans, a brief discussion on the proposed CDE PST, a
report on the OSF Research Institute's security related
activities, a report from ICL on SESAME version 2 and
beyond, TIS's ideas on Software Key Escrow, the effort
to define Distributed Systems Security Criteria, and the
NSA's Synergy program.

In addition to the above topics, the SIG also had an
End-User requirements presentation from ITT Hartford.
Lastly, the SIG took advantage of SUPER SIG week by
receiving short briefings from the chairs of the DCE SIG
and the EUSC.

The Security SIG also used this meeting to formally
create two new working groups. The first will develop a
RFC on the topic of Single Sign-on and is chaired by
Maryann Hondo from HP. The second will develop a RFC on
Public Key Cryptography based services and is chaired by
Ellen McDermott from Open Vision. The SIG's DCE Security
Requirements working group also had elections and Gary
Gaskell from DSTC was elected chair and Tom Hunwick from
EDS was elected editor.

Future OSF Security SIG Meetings are scheduled as
follows:
February 27 - March 3 1995; Brisbane Australia
June 27 - 29 1995; Copenhagen Denmark
Early November 1995; Boston Area

Internationalization SIG

The OSF Internationalization (I18N) SIG met on
Wednesday, November 2 in Newton, Massachusetts as part
of OSF SuperSIG 1994. The major technical discussion at
this meeting was on I18N-related requirements for OSF
DCE releases beyond 1.1, and how to deliver these now
that DCE is being managed within the PST process. We
also had an update on the OSF-coordinated DCE 1.1
localization project.

The other major topic of the meeting was how the I18N
SIG could best function and have influence and value for
ALL technologies in the new OSF PST process. Within
this process, OSF members and SIGs may not know about
new technologies or be able to offer input until later
in the design process previously. There was some
question about whether continuing an OSF-focused SIG
made sense in light of the fact that PST "authoring
groups" make many design decisions before OSF approval
is formally sought.

Our decision was to continue the I18N SIG and to work
closely with OSF to optimize the timeliness and quality
of information on new technologies being made available
to our SIG and others through the PST process.
Regarding face-to-face I18N SIG meetings, we plan to
meet twice a year, once at the annual SuperSIG and once
together (in time and place) with one of the larger SIGs
whose technology has significant internationalization
requirements. These future meetings will be announced
when they are scheduled.

We are completely rebuilding the OSF
Internationalization SIG e-mail distribution list (sig-
international@osf.org). If you wish to remain on the
list or be added to it, you MUST make a new request.
Send an e-mail message to Sandra Martin O'Donnell
(odonnell@osf.org) giving your name, company, job title,
e-mail address, postal address, telephone number, and
FAX number.

contact one of the Co-Chairs, Jon Bale of Hewlett-
Packard (jon_bale@cup.hp.com) or Terry Rowan of IBM
(terryr@ausvm6.vnet.ibm.com).
