OSF, HP AND DIGITAL TO ACCELERATE USE OF THE
DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT THROUGH
PUBLIC DOMAIN SUBMISSION
DCE RPC and IDL Compiler Source to be Accessible
Via the Internet
NEW YORK, October 3, 1994 -- Digital Equipment
Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Company and the Open
Software Foundation today announce that they will be
providing key communications and application development
components of the Open Software Foundation's Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE) into the public domain.
Both the DCE remote procedure call (RPC) and the
interface definition language (IDL) compiler will be
submitted to the Internet for access by anyone
interested in using the technologies for distributed
application development. This access to key components
of DCE will be royalty-free and open, further
encouraging and accelerating the use of DCE by
developers.
"Having DCE RPC in the public domain furthers the goal
of the open systems industry by facilitating
interoperability standardization," said Peter Shaw,
Director of Business Development at OSF. "Standardizing
the interoperability mechanism is key for distributed
systems."
The DCE RPC provides the communications infrastructure
for building distributed applications that can
communicate with other DCE applications. The IDL
compiler is used to generate the client and server
application components, known as stubs, required for
applications to run in the DCE environment. Together,
these components provide application portability
and interoperability across heterogeneous platforms.
The DCE RPC and the IDL Compiler software technology was
originally submitted to OSF to be part of the DCE by HP
and Digital. Digital and HP continue to provide support
and enhancements on an on-going basis. Now, both
companies are working with the OSF to enable public
access to these technologies and subsequent enhancements
on an on-going basis.
"DCE is rapidly expanding in acceptance and purchase in
the marketplace. Virtually every large company is
specifying DCE as a key enabling technology for their
distributed computing infrastructure," said Carol G.
Mills, general manager of HP's General Systems Division.
"Our response to this exceptional customer demand is to
increase the pace of innovation and application
availability through public domain access."
"This is a very important step for the industry," said
William R. Demmer, vice president of Digital's Software
Business Group. "We believe that a freely available RPC
will help to speed the industry adoption and use of this
important technology, and will enable users to gain many
of the important benefits of DCE. As co-developer of
the DCE RPC, Digital is pleased to jointly provide this
technology to the industry."
Both the DCE RPC and the IDL Compiler will be accessible
to the public via the Internet by October 15th, 1994.
The Open Software Foundation delivers open systems
technology with the objective of enabling users to
exploit information technology to improve the way they
do business. OSF supplies software to make information
technology easier to learn and easier to use, while
enabling various vendors' equipment to work together,
sharing applications and information across distributed
open computing environments. OSF has created a coalition
of vendors and users who work together to provide the
best available open systems technologies. Headquartered
in Cambridge, MA, with offices in Brussels, Grenoble,
and Tokyo, OSF has more than 400 members worldwide.
Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in
open client/server solutions from personal computing to
integrated worldwide information systems. Digital's
scalable Alpha AXP platforms, storage, networking,
software and services, together with industry-focused
solutions from business partners, help organizations
compete and win in today's global marketplace.
Hewlett-Packard Company is an international manufacturer
of measurement and computation products and systems
recognized for excellence in quality and support. The
company's products and services are used in industry,
business, engineering, science, medicine and education
in approximately 110 countries. HP has 97,900 employees
and had revenue of $20 billion in its 1993 fiscal year.

End User Forum Activity
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The next End User Forum event will occur during SuperSIG
week on Wednesday, November 2. The Forum begins with a
working lunch open to any SuperSIG participants with
common interests. A topic suggested for the lunch is
"OSF Technology Requirements Coordinated by SIG chairs
and the End User Forum." To eliminate scheduling
conflicts, there are no SuperSIG events running in
parallel during this extended lunch session.
After lunch, an End User Forum session, open to End User
participation and vendor observation, runs until
approximately 5:00 pm. Suggested topics include; status
of end user participation on existing Project Steering
Committees and the Architecture Planning Council, event
planning for 1995, coordination with other end user
groups (notably X/Open), a discussion around maximizing
the benefits of OSF membership through increased
participation by end users and enhanced services from
OSF.
We will distribute the agenda for the lunch and End User
Forum within the next couple of weeks. Any suggestions
should be sent to Ted Hanss, Chair, End User Forum
Steering Committee at ted@umich.edu (phone: +1-313-763-
6185, FAX: +1-313-763-4434).
Reminder: Please register your email address with Jane
Smeloff (jane@osf.org) in order to get mailings to the
end user membership. We want to get that mailing list to
a critical mass so we can begin to use it more
effectively.

DCE at SuperSIG Week
End user, system vendor, and ISV members will have yet
another chance to hear the latest developments on DCE
and to help shape the future of the technology at
SuperSIG October 30 - November 2. SuperSIG will be an
open forum for exchange on the topics most important to
the membership and the industry at large. There will be
a detailed review of the OSF-Request for Comment (RFC)
63 ("DCE 1.2 Contents Overview") led by Joe Pato from
Hewlett-Packard on Tuesday, November 1.
In addition to the combined DCE/DME general session,
there will be numerous workgroups on topics such as:
business, management, quality, Object Oriented,
Database, I18N, l10N and deployment. Come take
advantage of this opportunity to get involved.
OSF to Accelerate Adoption of Interoperable Technology
This month OSF, along with Digital Equipment Corporation
and Hewlett-Packard, announced that they will be making
the DCE RPC and the IDL compiler freely available via
the Internet. This move will help DCE gain even more
momentum through the resulting increase in application
developer activity.
Developers will be able to accelerate their deployment
efforts by working directly with DCE RPC and IDL. This
will widen the breadth of DCE research and development
across the entire industry, leading towards the goal of
ubiquitous DCE deployment. This announcement is being
made just months after OSF reduced DCE pricing to a
point that encourages system vendors to include DCE on
all their shipments.
Next DCE Product Catalog Revision
Vendors and solution providers are continually releasing
new DCE products and services, and OSF will capture the
latest of these in the next revision of the DCE Product
Catalog. It will be released November 18th, 1994.
Current copies of the catalog may be obtained by
contacting OSF Direct Channels at: 617-621-7300 -
direct@osf.org.
If you know of a listing that should be added or updated
in the catalog, please send the information to Courtney
Grey grey@osf.org by November 11. Please put DCE
PRODUCT CATALOG in the subject to expedite processing.
As always, OSF is more than happy to address any
questions regarding platforms and vendors that are not
currently in the catalog.

WWW Conference Update, October 17-20, Chicago
Why are 1,300 of world's leading Webmeister's heading to
a down-town hotel in Chicago next week? They are among
the lucky attendees of the sold out Second International
World-Wide Web Conference Fall '94 focusing on Mosaic
and the Web. Why are they lucky? More than 300
individuals were turned away when space for the
conference filled just eight weeks after the conference
was announced via the Web in July.
The conference organizers knew that interest in the Web
and Mosaic was exploding, and tripled the conferences
size from the first conference, held last May in Cern,
Switzerland. To accommodate those individuals unable to
attend, a server containing approximately 200 papers
presented at the conference will be made available via
the WEB, following the event. Watch the Web following
the conference for the posting of conference papers and
for announcements on the next WWW Conference. As was
the case for this years' event, the announcement for the
next conference will be made via the WEB.
Announcements of the next WWW Conference will be posted
to:
URL: http://riwww.osf.org:8001/index.html
and
URL: http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/IT94/IT94Info.html
With a speaker and attendee list that reads like a who's
who in Mosaic and the World-Wide Web, the conference
program covers the growing impact of the World-Wide Web;
how to use Mosaic; advanced features of Mosaic;
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML); WWW and Internet
software and service; information security on the Web;
server management; the future of WWW communication for
education, social sciences, government, medical,
financial and other commercial uses.
For a look at the full conference agenda, the Web access
URL is:

Research Institute Releases High Performance Microkernel
and Server
Recent OSF RI operating system results in performance
and real-time have been combined in a single release, MK
6.1, which is now available in snapshot form to OSF/1
1.3 licensees. MK 6.1 consists of the RI Mach
microkernel and an OSF/1 server for the Intel x86
platform.
Utilizing a variety of performance techniques, such as
collocation and device driver asynchronous I/O (which
permits task notification directly from interrupt
context), this system offers performance that is within
5% (or better) of the integrated Unix kernels available
for the x86 PC. A low level Mach performance test suite
is included with the release.
MK 6.1 includes a variety of real-time features such as
a new synchronizer interface in Mach, a real-time
threads library, and a new RPC interface. In addition
the Mach kernel is now preemptible.
For more information about the OSF Research Institute's
MK6 project goal to demonstrate that microkernel based
systems can achieve performance levels close to or
equivalent to integrated operating systems, or for MK
6.1 snapshot information, please contact Marci Kelley at
617-621-7341 or marci@osf.org.
The OSF Research Institute's Internet Program
As organizations re-engineer for the 90's, a growing
number are closely examining use of the Internet and in
particular, the World-Wide Web (WWW) servers as a low
cost vehicle for fostering communications, and
distributing and collecting information. According to
some sources, Internet bandwidth consumed by WWW
applications has been growing at twice the rate of total
Internet bandwidth consumption. From June 1993
to March 1994, the number of World-Wide Web servers
increased from approximately 130 to over 1,260
(Internet World, Sept. 94). This emerging worldwide
information infrastructure will offer significant
productivity advantages to knowledge workers of the mid
to late 90's provided that the technology is easy to use
and includes security for sensitive information.
To help users connect and move around the Internet, and
feel more secure about World-Wide Web transactions,
Open Software Foundation Research Institute (OSF RI) in
collaboration with commercial and government sponsors,
has undertaken three programs. The first program
explores distributed clients for ease-of-use and
increased productivity on the Internet. The second
examines intelligent agent assistance for Internet
browsing. The last looks at integration of DCE
(particularly the robust security features) with the
Mosaic application and the World-Wide Web servers. How
each of the three RI programs propose to satisfy basic
user requirements are described below.
Integrating DCE services and Mosaic
Today, Mosaic clients and the cross-linked network of
World-Wide Web (WWW) servers offer users only minimal
security. Better security, combined with ease of use,
points to a very exciting future for users of the Web.
Enhanced security will make it possible for publishers
to accept credit card orders and verify a customer's
signature, and credit card information over the Web.
It could also open the door for customers to access
information about their personal bank account, not
just about the bank's services.
OSF RI is taking on the challenge of re-engineering the
Mosaic browser application and the current Hypertext
Transport Protocol (HTTP) used by the WWW to provide
full DCE security, including authentication,
authorization and data protection. The intent is to
modify exiting protocols and software minimally, while
taking advantage of the rich functionality provided by
the OSF Distributed Computing Environment (OSF DCE)
technology.
Delivery of a research prototype DCE WWW server and a
research prototype DCE Mosaic client is planned during
the second quarter of 1995.
For complete information on developments, usage, and
attitudes towards these technology explorations as
research programs progress, access the OSF RI Programs
information page on the WWW. The URL access code is:
http://riwww.osf.org:8001/ri/ri-info.html

Internet and WWW projects, and to include their project
team in our data base, can forward information and
