Executive Summary
<><><><><><><><><>

* The OSF DCE Developer's Conference was viewed as a
complete success.

     "OSF's DCE Developer's Conference was
     extremely well organized, well implemented
and well attended," said Dr. Ivan Ruzic,
Director of Product Marketing TUXEDO Systems
     at Novell.

"My perception of DCE before this event was
that it was accelerating, but now, with this
large turnout, I think DCE's growth is
exponential," said Robert J. Holtgraver, Jr.,
Senior Staff Systems Architect at Alcoa. "I've
run into a lot of people doing exactly what I'm
doing; we've reached critical mass, and we can now
share experiences. The vendor showcase made it
clear that there are sufficient tools to start
     building DCE solutions," continued Holtgraver.

* The Second International World-Wide Web (WWW)
Conference: Mosaic and the Web, planned for October 17-
20, 1994, in Chicago, sold out eight weeks following the

OSF DCE Developer's Conference Receives Rave Reviews
Unprecedented event, more than 700 in attendance

CAMBRIDGE, MA August 31, 1994 -- The Open Software
Foundation today announced that the OSF Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE) Developer's Conference, held
this week in Boston at the Westin Hotel, was viewed as
an overwhelming success. The conference consisted of
approximately 50 technical sessions that were divided
into four tracks focusing on DCE technology, deployment,
tools and products, and end-user success stories.

The event also included a Solutions Showcase that
featured hands-on demonstrations of DCE-based products
that interoperate over a wide range of computing
environments. Companies that participated in the
showcase included: AT&T Global Information Solutions,
Bull Worldwide Information Systems, Digital, Gradient
Technologies, Inc., Greenbrier & Russel, Inc., HaL
Software Systems, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Independence
Technologies, Inc., Intermetrics, Open Environment
Corporation, Open Horizon, PowerSoft, SunSoft and
Transarc.

"OSF's DCE Developer's Conference was extremely well
organized, well implemented and well attended," said Dr.
Ivan Ruzic, Director of Product Marketing TUXEDO Systems
at Novell. "Novell is very pleased to have used this
venue to announce the availability of their DCE-based
TUXEDO product. We believe that OSF-sponsored events
such as this are vital to evangelizing the importance
and benefits of DCE to general purpose distributed
computing."

"My perception of DCE before this event was that it was
accelerating, but now, with this large turnout, I think
DCE's growth is exponential," said Robert J. Holtgraver,
Jr., Senior Staff Systems Architect at Alcoa. "I've run
into a lot of people doing exactly what I'm doing; we've
reached critical mass, and we can now share experiences.
The vendor showcase made it clear that there are
sufficient tools to start building DCE solutions,"
continued Holtgraver.

"I was very impressed with the program, considering that
this was the first DCE Developer's Conference," said
Dave Chappell, Principal of Chappell & Associates, a
training and consulting firm focused on vendor-neutral
networking. "This is a strong indication of DCE's
probability of success."

The event was organized to educate both new and
experienced DCE users, developers and vendors. Areas
that were addressed entailed; design, implementation,
deployment, administration and management of distributed
systems. Sessions were conducted by some of the most
prominent industry experts. Special one-day technical
seminars were also offered during the conference that
focused on the technology and DCE application
development.

This was the first of a series of world-wide DCE
Developer Conferences that will be managed by Digital
Consulting, Inc. (DCI).

Second World-Wide Web Conference Sells Out

CAMBRIDGE, MA September 14, 1994 -- The Open Software
Foundation Research Institute (OSF RI) announced today
that the Second International World-Wide Web (WWW)
Conference: Mosaic and the Web, planned for October 17-
20, 1994, in Chicago, sold out eight weeks following the
July announcement of the event. New registrations are
still being accepted for placement on a waiting list.

According to Dr. Ira Goldstein, vice president research
and advance development, OSF RI, "The World-Wide Web
Conference Fall '94 is the most comprehensive program on
the Web and Mosaic available today. Registration far
exceeded our expectation. Our statistical analysis
showed that during the eight weeks before we halted
registration, the OSF server listing WWW registration
information was referenced by more than 10,000
interested individuals. Conference participation for
this fall's event will more than triple last May's
attendance in CERN, Switzerland."

The four-day program begins October 17, with intense
tutorial sessions on useful techniques for IS
organizations and technology implementors looking for
help in navigating the maze of information about
Internet, World-Wide Web and "net surfing" software
tools. The tutorial day is followed by multi-track
conference sessions on October 18 and 19. The final day
of the program, October 20, is devoted to programmers.
Fast-paced sessions include essential developer
information, what's in store, an advanced developer
questions and answer session, and discussions with the
NCSA Mosaic development team.

The Second International World-Wide Web Conference
enjoys the sponsorship of today's most prominent
industry pioneers, gurus and visionaries including:

*	CERN (Centre European pour la Recherche Nucleaire),
     the Web's original designers;

* NCSA (National Center for Supercomputer
     Applications in Champaign, Ill) Software
     Development Group, developers of Mosaic;

* NSF (National Science Foundation); and

* OSF Research Institute, research providers for the
next generation of open systems technology.

As part of its ongoing research projects in the Internet
and Mosaic, OSF RI used the conference information and
registration process to better understand the direct and
indirect costs of the Internet and the World-Wide Web
for business. Registrants accessing information on the
Web could read about the conference, register using an
interactive format, and receive an immediate email
confirmation.

"Barriers to commercial use of the Internet and the Web
have fallen and today the focus is on commercial
opportunities," commented OSF RI's Jackie Stewart, Human
Computer Interaction (HCI) Program Manager. "Our
experience proves that expensive hard copy direct mail
and trade magazine advertising can be significantly
reduced by substituting electronic services such as
email and newsgroups on the Internet and providing
information via the Web."

Complete information about the upcoming conference can
be viewed on the Web. The access URL is:

End User Forum Activity
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The next End User Forum event will occur during SuperSIG
week on Wednesday, November 2. The Forum begins with a
working lunch open to any SuperSIG participants with
common interests. A topic suggested for the lunch is
"OSF Technology Requirements Coordinated by SIG chairs
and the End User Forum." To eliminate scheduling
conflicts, there are no SuperSIG events running in
parallel during this extended lunch session.

After lunch, an End User Forum session, open to End User
participation and vendor observation, runs until
approximately 5:00 pm. Suggested topics include; status
of end user participation on existing Project Steering
Committees and the Architecture Planning Council, event
planning for 1995, coordination with other end user
groups (notably X/Open), a discussion around maximizing
the benefits of OSF membership through increased
participation by end users and enhanced services from
OSF.

We will distribute the agenda for the lunch and End User
Forum within the next couple of weeks. Any suggestions
should be sent to Ted Hanss, Chair, End User Forum
Steering Committee at ted@umich.edu (phone: +1-313-763-
6185, FAX: +1-313-763-4434).

Reminder: Please register your email address with Jane
Smeloff (jane@osf.org) in order to get mailings to the
end user membership. We want to get that mailing list to
a critical mass so we can begin to use it more
effectively.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

DCE 1.1 Update

OSF has released a DCE 1.1 New Features document, which
describes the enhancements made to DCE 1.0.x. This
document is now available on the OSF Web server along
with other informative DCE documents: www.osf.org:8001
or in a hard copy version from OSF Direct:
direct@osf.org.

Development is proceeding according to schedule for DCE
1.1. The team has just passed the functional freeze and
will continue to perform functional and system tests on
the DCE 1.1 code.

Second Release of the DCE Release 1.1 Beta Source Code -
Available Now

We are pleased to announce that the second release of
the Beta source code for the upcoming Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE), Release 1.1, is available
electronically via the Andrew Filesystem (AFS).

This release was created from the DCE source the second
week of August and contains numerous bug fixes as well
as more complete versions of the DCE subcomponents
including DCED and DCECP. The second beta release
version contains DFS fully integrated into OSF DCE 1.1.

The objective of the Source Code Beta Test Program is to
offer OSF DCE licensees early access to the DCE 1.1
code. This allows beta program participants an early
beginning to their productization efforts for the next
version of DCE, expediting rapid availability of
products to the marketplace. Participation in the beta
program is open to all licensees of the current version
of DCE, Release 1.0, who are also DCE Full Support
subscribers.

A further benefit of the beta program comes from the
opportunity for OSF and the licensees to work together
to review and improve the quality of the release before
final shipment. Each licensee made a commitment to
actively participate in achieving the objectives of the
program.

The DCE Source Code Beta Test Program, second release,
started in late August and continues throught general
availability. Final shipment of DCE Release 1.1 is
scheduled for the end of 1994. There are no special
fees required to participate in the beta program except
those necessary to meet the requirements of being a DCE
1.0 licensee with a Full Support contract.

If you have any questions, please send mail to support-
admin@osf.org or call OSF Software Support at +1 617-
621-8990.

DCE Developer's Conference - a Success

In August, OSF held the first DCE-specific Developer's
Conference ever, offering end users and developers an
opportunity to share DCE development experiences. There
were over 700 registrants attending sessions such as:
DCE deployment, Security/single log-on, integration with
legacy systems, integration with relational database,
Desktop, and several other pertinent topics.

In addition, attendees examined the latest product
solutions offered by 14 vendors in the DCE showcase.
Offerings included tools to OLTP solutions that run on
implementations ranging from mainframes to desktops.
Furthermore, during the event, Novell announced the DCE-
based Tuxedo offering for distributed OLTP and Gradient
Technologies announced that it will partner with Novell
to provide DCE support for UnixWare and NetWare.

The Developer's Conference proved to be a landmark event
with record end user attendance. It is a good indicator
of DCE support and is strong encouragement for producing
other such events in the future.

Revised DCE Product Catalog Available

At the DCE Developer's Conference, OSF distributed the
latest revision of the DCE Product Catalog with over 100
of the most recent DCE products and services. Half of
the listings are applications/tools which indicate the
significant momentum behind the DCE industry. This
also shows that end users can start implementing DCE
projects today. Copies of the catalog may be obtained
by contacting OSF Direct - 617-621-7300 / literature-
request@osf.org. An ASCII version may be obtained at
grabbag.osf.org in the dce-rfc directory (use dce-rfc as
the password as well).

Since vendors are announcing DCE products and services
so rapidly, the catalog will be a living document. If
you have or know of any products or services that should
be added to the catalog please send the information to
Courtney Grey - grey@osf.org with DCE Product Catalog in
the subject line.

OSF Pre-Structured Technology (PST)
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The PST Process

The Pre-Structured Technology (PST) process is the new OSF
model designed to facilitate multi-company cooperative
development projects. It begins as an industry initiative in
which multiple sponsor companies collaborate in defining a
specific technology project.

PSTs have a five phased life cycle. The first phase is
the AUTHORING PHASE. In the authoring phase companies
work together to form a proposal for submission to OSF.
This phase can be as public or private as the authoring
companies choose to make it.

                   PST Life Cycle
                                            Distribution
Authoring Approval Funding Development & Support
  Phase Phase Phase Phase Phase

The second phase of the PST process begins when a
proposal is submitted to OSF. This is called the
APPROVAL PHASE. During the approval phase, OSF checks
the proposal for fit with OSF's open systems technology
road map, completeness and overall viability. During
this phase the proposal is also presented to OSF's
membership for review and comment as to how it meets
industry needs. The goal of the approval phase is to
prepare the proposal for submission to and evaluation by
OSF's Board. During this phase OSF works with the
authoring group to address issues that could prevent
approval of the proposal by OSF's Board.

The third phase is the FUNDING PHASE. This phase begins
after OSF's Board approves a PST proposal. During this
phase the opportunity to participate in the project as a
project sponsor is opened up to all OSF sponsor
companies. This phase lasts for at least 60 days as
determined by the authoring group.

The fourth phase is the DEVELOPMENT PHASE, during which
the actual work of the PST is done by the Prime
Contractor. The development phase may actually overlap
with the funding phase. During the development phase
the work is directed by a group called the Project
Steering Committee (PSC) which consists of
representatives from the project sponsor companies, the
end user community and OSF. OSF also acts as the overall
program and project manager for the PST.

The fifth phase is the DISTRIBUTION and SUPPORT PHASE.
It is during this phase that the completed offering is
licensed. Plans for any product support efforts are
also completed and implemented in this phase of the
project, and plans for continued product life cycle are
finalized.

The PST process is an out-sourcing development model that
capitalizes on existing pools of technical expertise,
eliminating costly and time consuming ramp-up periods and
redundant engineering effots. A collaborative effort, the
PST process benefits the industry by increasing the number of
projects initiated and reducing the time for completion,
enabling vendors to offer customers more and new open systems
products faster.

DCE 1.2 PST Update

The DCE PST authoring group has presented their initial
project plans at the recent OSF Board of Directors
meeting. In accordance with the PST process, the DCE
1.2 PST has now entered the Approval Phase. The OSF
Board of Directors has approved presenting the PST
proposal to the OSF membership for review and comment.

The focus of the DCE 1.2 PST project will be
administration, security and international acceptance,
legacy support, programming ease, scalability and other
features related to distributed file systems. To date,
project sponsors include: Digital Equipment Corporation,
Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, and Transarc.

This represents a major OSF milestone both by providing
a continuation of the DCE technology and also as
validation that the PST process can work effectively.
It also shows that OSF staff will continue to play a
critical role in bringing new technologies to market.

Common Desktop Environment/Motif PST Update

Digital, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, Novell,
and SunSoft expect to work under the new Open Software
Foundation (OSF) Pre-Structured Technology (PST) process
to coordinate the evolution of OSF/Motif(R) and the
Common Desktop Environment.

The seven companies are currently working together to
develop a PST proposal which the group intends to submit
to the OSF Board of Directors in December 1994. They
have signed an agreement with the X Consortium to
develop a project plan supporting the proposal. The X
Consortium has also been identified as the potential
prime contractor for the PST.

Security SIG

The OSF Security SIG met August 16-18 at IBM's
Facilities in Ruschlikon, just outside of Zurich,
Switzerland. The meeting was attended by more than 30
people.

Organizations represented included: Ciba-Geigy, Hughes,
Transarc, IBM, Shell International, Northern Telecom,
Hewlett-Packard, OSF, Bellcore, Bankers Trust,
OpenVision, Swedish Post, Novell, ICL, Barclay's Bank,
Novell, DSTC (Australia), Epfl, EDS, and AT&T.

The meeting was very successful and highlighted topics
of discussion included:

* Technology discussions regarding security attributes
of DCE (current and future releases).

* SIG Charter revisions. The Security SIG is
becoming much more end user driven. As a result, the
charter has been revised to ensure that at least
one SIG Co-Chair is always an end user.

* Finalization of RFC 8.1 and voting started.

* Commercial customer requirements dominate SIG
activities and directions. CIBA GEIGY and SHELL
   INTERNATIONAL gave great presentations
on their current and future information security
   requirements.

* Market requirements vs. government export
restrictions -- The battle continues as European
   customers require strong authentication and
integrity, yet some European countries have rules
and regulations that could restrict implementation of
   strong encryption.

* Updates on X/Open Cryptographic APIs, X.509, and GSS-
   API.

* Key Escrow. The Clipper Chip is NOT the only
alternative. Bankers Trust has a key escrow proposal
   involving trusted third parties.

* Single Sign-On and Role Base Authorization
discussions. Ease of Use dominates the discussion.

* Security SIG Elections. SIG Co-Chairs were elected
under the revised charter (see item #2 above).
   CHARLES BLAUNER, Bellcore, was re-elected
to a one year term and JIM SCHINDLER, Hewlett-
Packard, was re-elected to a two year term.

*  The SIG would like to extend a ** B I G ** THANK YOU
to Phil Janson and IBM Labs, Ruschlikon, for their
wonderful hospitality and use of their facilities
   for our meeting.

The next meeting will be in Boston during the SuperSIG
Week. You are encouraged to attend if you have an
interest in Information Security. We hope to see you
there!
