A monthly electronic mail news update for OSF Members
from the Open Software Foundation.
Vol 4, Issue 8 . November 19, 1993
<><><><><><><><><>
Executive Summary
<><><><><><><><><>
- OSF Revolutionizes DCE Pricing. New annual buy-out
pricing option will make open, distributed computing
easily affordable for all. This sweeping new option
offers an annual buy-out for the technology that allows
unlimited distribution of binary (executable) copies of
DCE.
- OSF 's Super SIG Week draws record crowds. Attendance
approached 500 with a new surge in interest from the end
user and ISV community.
- OSF recently announced the general availability of DME
1.0, the first fully interoperable, architecture-neutral
distributed management solutions available in the open
systems marketplace. These services are also fully
integrated with DCE, thereby providing users with the
fastest possible path to deploying and effectively
managing enterprise-wide distributed computing
environments. Look for more snapshots and releases of
DME during 1994.
- OSF officially surpasses distribution of one million
OSF/Motif copies. We made a slight mis-calculation. We
anticipated shipping 1,000,000 copies of OSF/Motif by the
end of 1993. Instead, it's happened in mid-year 1993!
- OSF is working on a new brochure listing all available
OSF/1 applications running on different vendor hardware.
OSF would like to include all members' products and
available applications. To list your applications in
this product catalogue, contact Marcia Roland, at
roland@osf.org or fax: 617-225-2782.
- National Security Agency releases Request for
Information to specify and implement a consistent set of

OSF's Super SIG Week Draws Record Crowds
The new Super SIG (Special Interest Group) Week event,
held for the first time November 1-5, in Boston, drew
record attendance of nearly 500 participants. The record
attendance is attributed in part to the growing
participation of software developers and end user
organizations.
"We were delighted to see such a strong turn-out for the
Super SIG Week event. This new program was initiated to
give OSF members the opportunity to participate in
multiple groups, while minimizing the impact on busy
schedules as well as reducing travel costs," said
Charles Reilly, Vice President of Operations.
"Participation in the SIGs is a key benefit of OSF
membership, and the high attendance here last week
underscores the continued importance our members place
on participating in the open process."
The OSF SIGs allow members to interact with their
colleagues throughout the industry and with OSF staff to
share information and address issues at both the
technical and the business level. Participation in the
OSF SIGs is open to any employee of an OSF member
company. The SIGs normally meet independently throughout
the year. This was the first time all the active SIGs
coordinated their schedules to meet in the same location
during a single week. SIGs that met during Super SIG
Week include:
- Documentation - DCE
- Management - Internationalization
- Networking - OSF/1
- Security - UEC (User Environment Component)
The most well attended was the DCE SIG, with
approximately 260 attendees demonstrating interest in
DCE as extremely high and growing. Several new comers
to the SIG represented the growing interest among
application developers and end users. The theme of the
meeting centered on the evolution of DCE to aid
universal adoption and widespread deployment.
"The DCE SIG is an excellent vehicle for end users not
only to become acquainted with the technology, but to
exchange information and experiences with a large number
of other users who have adopted DCE," commented Sumner
Blount, DCE SIG Chair. "Super SIG Week was a great
opportunity for OSF members to learn about all the OSF
technologies, and to network with a broad range of other
leading-edge customers."
The Management SIG also had record attendance, with more
than 125 participants. One of the highlights of the
meeting was the announcement of the general availability
of the Distributed Management Environment 1.0, which
provides five distributed management services. Other
topics included strategies for adoption and deployment
of DME distributed services, DME and DCE integration
development plans, and plans for providing management
services in an object-oriented environment.
In addition to its regular meeting, the User Environment
Component (UEC) SIG, which focuses on the Motif
technology, hosted a special awards ceremony. IBM, the
Santa Cruz Operation, SUN Microsystems, Integrated
Computer Solutions and Alsys were all awarded
OSF/Motif(R) Certification plaques. The award indicated
that each company successfully completed the OSF/Motif
Certification Process in 1993. To date, twenty-nine
implementations of Motif have been certified.
Pricing and packaging for OSF/Motif Release 2.0 as well
as changes in Motif snapshot licensing were detailed. A
primary focus of the meeting was a first-time, high-
level overview panel on the future of Motif, provided to
help attendees better understand the evolving Graphical
User Interface Environment.
"The general consensus seemed to be that Super SIG week
is a good idea that should become an annual event," said
Lee Fogal, Chairman of the Documentation SIG. "Doc SIG
members interested in attending other SIG meetings could
do so easily; no doubt this contributed to the better-
than-usual attendance for all of the SIG meetings."

OSF Special Interest Group (SIG) Updates
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
DCE SIG update:
The most recent DCE SIG meeting was held November 1-2 as
part of the Super SIG Week in Boston. OSF presented the
current status of the DCE program, Microsoft presented
their perspective on the DCE RPC, and Project Pilgrim
spoke about the performance information they collected in
their use of DCE. A new work group, called the DCE
Deployment work group, was formed in order to provide a
forum for end-users to discuss issues and exchange
experiences relating to the deployment of DCE.
A proposal was also made to merge the DCE and the
Management SIGs. This proposal was approved by the
members of the Management SIG later in the week. The
next meeting will be a joint meeting of these two SIGs.
Dates for the next DCE SIG meeting have not yet been
finalized. The meeting will most likely be in March, on
the West Coast, possibly in conjunction with the OSF DCE
Developer's Conference.
To join the DCE SIG and SIG distribution list, send mail
to sig-dce-request@osf.org. For general SIG questions
or comments, contact Sumner Blount at 508-486-5966
or blount@tuxedo.enet.dec.com.
Internationalization (I18N) SIG update:
The I18N SIG and its Localization (L10N) Focus Group met
in Boston during the recent Super*SIG*Week. OSF updated
the SIG on I18N on OSF/1, DCE, and DME. In addition, the
SIG heard presentations and discused a proposed new long-
term I18N strategy for OSF and on OSF's code-set
registry. Additional information on these and other
items covered during the meetings will be provided in the
meeting minutes which will be sent to the SIG's e-mail
distribution list. If you are not on this list and wish
to be, send a message with your Internet address to sig-
international-request@osf.org.
The L10N Focus Group, which met the day before the main
SIG, discussed doing common localization (translation) of
the Motif and DCE technologies. OSF and the Focus Group
will work together to get bids and send out a ballot for
the L10N requirements of members and licensees.
The SIG decided to plan three meetings in 1994, but no
dates or locations were chosen. We would like to have
our next meeting on the West Coast in March. We will
explore the idea of arranging this meeting to be held in
the same place as, and to overlap with the dates of the
next DCE/DME SIG, since much of our interest now lies in
the technologies outside of OSF/1.
Address addition SIG questions to Jon Bale: email:
jon_bale@cup.hp.com, Hewlett-Packard Company, 19447
Pruneridge Avenue, Cupertino, CA 95014 U.S.A., phone:
408-447-6022, fax: 408-447-0801. To join the SIG and
SIG distribution list, send mail to sig-international-
request@osf.org.
Security SIG update:
The OSF Security SIG met as part of OSF's Super*SIG*Week
on November 3 & 4 in Boston, MA. The meeting was preceded
by a one day DCE-DME Security Working Group (WG) meeting.
The attendance of both meetings was higher than normal
(approximately 50 people), mostly due to the fact that
Super*SIG*Week brought together all of the SIGs, End-
Users, and ISVs.
The main focus of the WG was defining and prioritizing
new security requirements for DCE. These requirements
will be published in an updated RFC 8.1. The WG group
also held elections. Bob Blakely (IBM) was re-elected as
chair and John Wray (Digital) is the newly elected vice-
chair. The WG and full SIG would like to thank Joe Pato
(HP) for the time he spent during his term as WG vice-
chair.
The SIG agenda included discussions on:
- OSF technology (OSF/1, DCE, and DME) program status
- The DCE Security AES (a draft will be available soon,
and the SIG members are asked to provide detailed,
timely comments)
- Fidelity Investment gave a talk on their needs for
security. (An "Industry Needs" talk is a regularly
scheduled part of all Security SIG meetings).
- A detailed discussion of the new security mechanisms
in the 1993 version of X.500
- A discussion on the Object Management Group (OMG) and
the security working group they have formed. The SIG
believes that a certain amount of interaction between
the two groups will be necessary because of OMG's
impact on DME.
- A high-level review of the DME Services and their use
of DCE security.
- X Window Security white-paper status and strategies
for implementing it.
There were two working groups that met the last afternoon
of the SIG meeting. They discussed:
- New "Umbrella" security requirement (Public Key and
OS Login Integration)
- OSF Security Strategy - How to improve and implement
the Security SIG's Strategy document.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for February 1
- 3, 1994, location to be determined.
Questions on the activities of the Security SIG can be
sent to: Jim Schindler (Hewlett Packard) js@cup.hp.com.
To join the SIG and SIG distribution list, send mail to
sig-security-request@osf.org.
User Environment Component (UEC) SIG
Over seventy people participated in the November 2-3 UEC
SIG sessions during the 1994 OSF Super*Sig*Week. The
meeting included presentations and discussions of
OSF/Motif Release 2.0, requirements for Release 2.1,
current definition of UEC-II, and a preview of the terms
and conditions for Release 2.0. Elizabeth Connolley,
Director of OSF UEC Technologies, presented a
comprehensive overview and status of all UEC programs.
OSF also previewed and distributed a draft of the most
recent UEC Roadmap.
During the first morning, OSF awarded several companies
OSF Certification Plaques to commemorate the efforts of
companies achieving their first OSF Certified Motif
implementation. Receiving the awards were Larry Vernec
on behalf of Alsys, Ajay Bansal on behalf of IBM, Chris
Craig on behalf of ICS, Nick Kassem on behalf of SCO,
and Dr. Jim Murkerjee on behalf of SunSoft.
The SIG later broke into three work groups; technical,
style and business, to discuss other issues and topics.
On the afternoon of the second day, the entire UEC-SIG
again met and reviewed the various working groups
accomplishments and recommendations to OSF.
Because all OSF SIG groups met in the same week, members
were able to visit several other SIGs and working groups
that previously were held on different dates and in
different locations.
Members unable to attend the meeting may obtain a copy
of the UEC Roadmap document by emailing either
betz@osf.org or crow@osf.org. Electronic postscript
copies of OSF's presentations to the uec-sig may be
obtained by sending your requests to burrage@osf.org.
To join the SIG and SIG distribution list, send mail to
sig-uec-request@osf.org.

Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF Revolutionizes DCE Pricing
New annual buy-out pricing option will make open,
distributed computing easily affordable for all
OSF unveiled a significant new pricing option for its
Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) technology
offering. This sweeping new option offers an annual buy-
out for the technology that allows unlimited
distribution of binary (executable) copies of DCE.
This new binary buy-out option makes DCE much more
affordable at the user level, and simplifies the
accounting and royalty reporting requirements for high-
volume commercial distribution licensees of DCE. The OSF
DCE commercial licensee selecting this buy-out option
may now distribute unlimited copies of DCE object code
and documentation during a single 12-month ordering
period for a fixed annual fee of $4.5M.
"Simplifying the tracking and accounting of binary
shipments of DCE technology will promote high-volume
distributions of DCE on multiple platforms by commercial
vendors", said Peter Shaw, Director of Distributed
Environment Business Programs at OSF. "This could only
accelerate the availability of DCE products on
heterogeneous platforms," added Shaw.
This new buy-out option, based in part on feedback OSF
received from its membership, is in addition to the
original unit volume-based discount model and is
available to any organization that is currently a
commercial re-distribution rights licensee of DCE.
National Security Agency releases Request for
Information
During the very well attended OSF Super SIG week, the
National Security Agency released a Request for
Information (RFI) to the members of the DCE database
working group of the DCE SIG. This RFI was prepared by
the Maryland Procurement Office in accordance with the
Federal Acquisition Regulation 15.405 and is for
information purposes only.
As a member of the Open Software Foundation the NSA has
elected to present the DCE Database working group with
this RFI. The intent of the RFI is to challenge their
parent companies' agents with the goal of adopting a
standard method of database interoperability and
management. Copies of this RFI can be obtained by
contacting Rich Murtha, 301-688-7623, at the NSA or by
contacting Maribeth Llopiz, 617-621-8755, at OSF.
The goal of this RFI is to specify and implement a
consistent set of DBMS services accessible by any DCE
client. These services are to be accessed by
making Remote Procedural Calls (RPC) to distributed
database APIs. The application developer must have
access to these services independent of which DBMS
engines have been used to build and maintain the
underlying databases.
DCE demo opportunity at Uniform Showcase in March
OSF will host a DCE Interoperability Demonstration
Exhibit at UniForum, March 23-25, San Francisco. If you

Distributed Management Environment (DME) Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Planning Ahead for DME in 1994
Efforts are underway in many organizations to complete
next year's business plan and budget. With that in mind,
OSF would like you to remember DME in your 1994 budget.
OSF recently announced the general availability of DME
1.0, the first fully interoperable, architecture-neutral
distributed management solutions available in the open
systems marketplace. The DME Distributed Services are
fully integrated with DCE, thereby providing users with
the fastest possible path to deploying and effectively
managing enterprise-wide distributed computing
environments.
Engineering efforts continue on the development of DME.
Future releases will allow the incorporation of legacy
systems by supporting existing network management
protocols SNMP and CMIP in distributed environments. In
addition, DME will be providing an object-oriented
application programming interface (API) for interoperable
distributed management applications. So, you can look
for more snapshots and releases of DME during 1994.
Remember, plan and budget not just for the snapshots, but
also for education and training, consulting, as well as
the licensing of the DME technology.
For more information, please contact: Lance Travis, OSF,

ANDF Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Watch this space for more information about a new ANDF
research kit that uses GCC as the basis for installers.
The kit is currently in alpha test. OSF will offer it by
the end of December under a new ANDF Cooperative Research
Agreement, which will replace the current ANDF Snapshot
program. Current ANDF Snapshot licensees are encouraged
to participate in the Cooperative Research program, as
the ANDF technology has been considerably enhanced since
the last Snapshot distribution.
For additional ANDF information, contact Andy Johnson at

OSF/Motif Highlights - User Environment Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
IEEE P1295.1 Motif Standard Update
The IEEE Computer Society P1295.1 Motif-based standard
closed its recirculation balloting on November 8th with
a 100% affirmative vote. This completes the technical
production of the draft and now enters an administrative
process including a letter ballot by the IEEE Standards
Board (currently in progress) for consideration as a
formal standard at their December meeting.
Participants selected for OSF/Motif 2.0 Beta Program
Recently an invitation was issued for companies to
submit proposals to OSF outlining their interest in
participating in the beta program for Motif 2.0. The
response was overwhelming, and although OSF would have
liked to select everyone, the list was narrowed to eight
beta program participants. They include, Boeing, Cray,
DEC, IBM, Merril Lynch, Sunsoft, SCO, and SGI. These
companies will be asked to work on "proofing" certain
areas of the snapshot code. If you have specific
questions regarding the program, contact either OSF
Direct at 617-621-7300 (direct@osf.org) or Darrell Crow
at 617-621-7278 (crow@osf.org).
All Members can obtain early access to the beta snapshot
All OSF member companies are invited and encouraged to
secure snapshots (advanced source code releases) of the
upcoming OSF/Motif Release 2.0. In this fashion,
members are able to become familiar with an upcoming
release and to prepare for the General Availability (GA)
of the final released technology. Feedback received
during the snapshot program allows OSF to fix problems,
make adjustments and in general to produce a high-
quality, robust GA release. Pricing for snapshot
releases is $1,000. A full distribution option is
available at $15,000. Members may elect to join the
snapshot program now for $1,000 and then upgrade to full
distribution rights at $14,000 at a later date. In
either case certain restrictions and obligations apply
for snapshot distribution licensees once GA arrives.
You may still obtain a copy of the beta snapshot and
avail yourself to early access to Release 2.0 by
contacting OSF Direct at 617-621-7300 or via email
direct@osf.org.
OSF officially Surpasses One Million MOTIF copies
That's right! At the outset of 1993, OSF said by the
end of the year that copies of Motif distributed would
exceed 1,000,000. We made a slight mis-calculation. We
anticipated shipping 1,000,000 copies of Motif at the
end of 1993. Instead, its happened in mid-year 1993.
OUTSTANDING! Congratulations to everyone who
contributed to OSF/Motif's overwhelming industry support
and user acceptance.
OSF Hosts Session at X/Open CDE Conference
On October 18-29, OSF hosted a session of the X/Open
Common Desktop working group. At this two-week meeting,
the OSF Motif specifications were reviewed, as well as
other specifications submitted by the Common Desktop
Environment (CDE) developers. The group approved a
motion that the OSF/Motif specifications were ready to
undergo the X/Open Fast Track process. OSF subsequently
handed to X/Open a tape containing the sources of the
AES Revision D and specifications for Drag and Drop.
OSF has volume based pricing for OSF/Motif
OSF announced new volume buyout pricing for DCE during
the recent Super*SIG*Week. Details of this outstanding
offer are printed in the the DCE segment of this
bulletin. In addition, we would like to call attention
to the previously announced OSF/Motif annual buyout
option. This option allows full distribution licensees
to pay a fixed annual fee of $1,000,000 per operating
system for use or distribution of an unlimited number of
copies of Motif in binary (executable object code) form.
The annual buyout covers Motif 1.2.x binary copies used
or distributed in a single twelve-month ordering period
for a single operating system. This option allows use
or distribution of Motif on different hardware platforms
as long as they employ the same operating system.
Organizations expecting to use or re-distribute in
excess of 55,000 copies per year should explore the
value of the buyout. No other changes have been made to
the pricing of Motif Release 1.2. This buyout option
will also be available for Release 2.0.

OSF/1 Highlights
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF/1 R1.3 Snapshot 1 Available
OSF continues to process orders for Snapshot 1 of OSF/1
operating system Release 1.3, which was made available
in October. The first snapshot provides an early look
at the microkernel based OSF/1 Release 1.3 source code.
Scalability and extensibility are just a few of the
salient features of the microkernel technology. In
addition, OSF/1 Release 1.3 provides CDLI (Common Data
Link Interface) - a kernel interface for network device
drivers. The Networking special interest group (SIG)
unanimously endorsed CDLI. The additional 64 bit
support provided in this release will make it easier for
system vendors to port OSF/1 to their 64 bit
architecture.
There are two more snapshots planned before general
availability in 2Q94. To order your OSF/1 Snapshot,
please contact OSF Direct Channels at 617-621-7300 or
direct@osf.org.
OSF/1 V1.2.2 is Available
The OSF/1 V1.2.2 integrated kernel maintenance release
is available. If you have not received it or have any
questions about this release, please contact OSF/1
Support at 617-621-8900.
OSF/1 Application Product Catalogue Planned
OSF is working on a new promotional brochure listing all
available OSF/1 applications running on different vendor
hardware platforms. OSF would like to include all
member's products and available applications. The
product catalogue will list software vendors and their
products as well as companies that provide OSF/1
consulting and training. If you have information on
your application or currently have a list of
applications that run on your platform and want it
included in this Product Catalogue, please contact
Marcia Roland, OSF/1 Technology Manager, at 617-621-8720
or email: roland@osf.org.
OSF begins to plan the OSF booth at Uniforum
OSF is beginning to plan it's booth at Uniforum. This
is an opportunity for members to participate with
equipment and demonstrations highlighting their
implementation of the OSF/1 operating system. If you
are interested in exhibiting in the OSF booth at
Uniforum, please contact Marcia Roland, OSF/1 Technology
Manager, at 617-621-8720 or email: roland@osf.org.

Microkernel information
Available now from OSF is a reprint of a recent Seybold
"Open Information Systems" publication containing an
article titled, "Tomorrow's Microkernel-Based Unix
Operating Systems."
This article gives an excellent overview of what a
microkernel is, then goes on to examine and contrast
current microkernel offerings (including those from OSF)
and takes a look at the future. All in all, a balanced
view of the current state of the technology and
products.
To request a copy of this reprint, send email to
<literature-request@osf.org> or phone 617-621-8895.
Please include the document title and part number with
