** OSF European Event Success Story
In Paris on 24th January 1995, Sycomore, with the help of
OSF, held an extremely successful seminar entitled : DCE: a
basis for the deployment of major projects.
This seminar was attended by nearly 100 Information Systems
Managers from a wide variety of professional domains,
including Government, Telecommunications, Banking and
Insurance, Transportation and Public Utilities, Industry,
etc.
The aim of the seminar was to review the effectiveness of DCE

Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
** Decorum '95 and DCE
The Decorum conference in La Jolla was a huge success.
The conference was dedicated to promoting the successful
implementation of client/server computing solutions based
on the DCE model of computing. Over 700 people turned out
for the three-day program which included five concurrent
tracks with over 75 sessions and 90 speakers -- a ringing
endorsement for the advancement of DCE technology-based
solutions in the industry.
The majority of the sessions were presented by end-users who
are implementing DCE technologies throughout their
environments. In addition to end-user talks, Decorum'95
offered presentations by the major DCE systems vendors,
independent software vendors and consulting organizations.
These talks were supplemented by a Product Demonstration
Center which showcased the latest generation of DCE-based
products.
OSF's Joe Maloney, DCE Business Area Manager, and Rich Salz,
DCE Technical Lead, gave a DCE update to a full house,
covering DCE deployment and DCE 1.1 features in detail.
To order proceedings from the conference, send your request
to decorum@transarc.com.

** New DCE Case Study Available
OSF has released a new technology case study entitled:
"NASA's Mission to Planet Earth: Changing the World's
Environment." This study focuses on NASA's Earth Observing
System Data Information System, one of the largest
information systems ever implemented, comprised of legacy
systems and data, computers of many varieties, far-flung
networks, and satellites in space. The study outlines the
role of DCE in federating its large distributed active
archive centers across the country as well as interoperating
with many other sites in the U.S. and abroad.
For a copy of the NASA case study, please contact OSF Direct
Channels at direct@osf.org or access the OSF WWW serverat

** DCE in the News
"Today DCE is supported by nearly every major system vendor
and an increasing number of software vendors. 'There are
70 DCE tools,' says Roy Schulte, a program director with
the Gartner Group. 'A year ago that number was seven.' . . .
DCE is transforming a wide range of products, including
transaction monitors, network management tools, application
development tools, and software for printing and document
distribution across wide-area networks."
-- Open Computing, February 1995
"Each of the networking services that are part of DCE are the
legacy that's going to be used as part of the implementation
architectures for corporation, " Frank Dzubeck, chief
executive officer of Communications Network Architects, Inc.
-- Client/Server Journal, February 1995
"The Open Software Foundation, Inc.'s (OSF) Distributed

** OSF Interoperability Festival (I-FEST)
OSF is hosting its' Third Interoperability Festival
(I-FEST '95) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from June 5th
through the 16th.
OSF's Interoperability Festival (I-FEST), provides a large
scale, multi-vendor environment allowing engineers to work
closely with one another to solve interoperability issues on
a real-time interactive basis. Participants have access to
other vendor systems and their engineers, that may not be
available to them otherwise. Vendors execute OSF designated
tests in specified OSF DCE configurations creating
environments that resemble end user scenarios. Successful
participants will also complete one of the steps towards
achieving OSF DCE Certification for their implementation.
During the first week of the event, participants will test
their DCE implementations bilaterally, in a heterogeneous
environment, against each of the other participants'
platforms using the currently defined testing
requirements, in the applicable client and server
configurations. During the second week, participants' will
perform additional testing of the secure core (i.e., split
and replicated servers), as well as test DFS and
GDS products.
Registration kits and testing requirement information for
I-FEST '95 will be available in early February 1995. For
more information send mail to the contact information below.
** OSF DCE Certification Program
The OSF DCE Certification program is a vehicle to ensure end
users that OSF DCE Certified products provide application,
data, and platform interoperability across DCE
implementations. The objective of the OSF DCE Certification
Program is to ensure a consistent level of DCE functional
compliance across all products, where products are defined as
a specific hardware and software configuration.
The DCE certification program certifies the Secure Core,
Distributed File System (DFS) and Global Directory Service
(GDS) components of DCE. The Secure Core component includes
the Threads (THR), Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Security
(SEC), Cell Directory Service (CDS), and the Distributed
Time Service (DTS) components of DCE.
The program consists of three parts:
1. Open Development
The program facilitates "open development" so that vendors
can cooperate in assuring interoperability before reaching
the market place. Participants are encouraged to do
comprehensive interoperability testing in multiple scenarios
and configurations and make OSF Interoperability Program
testing an integral component of their own testing.
2. Validation Test Suite (VTS)
The applicant must submit to OSF a Statement of Conformance
that their product fully complies with the OSF Application
Environment Specification / Distributed Computing (AES/DC).
The AES/DC specifies a comprehensive set of application-level
interfaces, as well as the associated semantics and
protocols, necessary to provide portable and interoperable
implementations and applications.
The OSF DCE Validation Test Suite (VTS) tests the conformance
of a vendor's DCE implementation against the portability and
interoperability specifications described in the AES/DC.
These specifications cover the syntax and semantics of the
Application Programmer's Interface (API), describe how
implementations of the client and server runtimes
communicate, describe a set of abstract services that the
runtime must implement, and specify the conformance
requirements that conforming implementations must meet.
Successful passage of the VTS is a requirement for
certification. A product successfully passes the VTS if the
entire test suite can run on the platform being certified
with no failures other than those that are explicitly waived
by OSF.
3. Interoperability Festival (I-FEST)
Another requirement for certification is to attend the OSF
Interoperability Festival (I-FEST) with the platform being
certified. Participants must successfully achieve the
testing requirements, in the applicable client and server
configurations, for the I-FEST event. For more information
about the I-FEST event see the description above.
Those products that submit the Statement of Conformance,
successfully run the VTS, and complete the I-FEST
requirements are authorized to display OSF's DCE
certification seal for that product.

** Desktop Interest Group
During 1994, OSF transitioned to a co-operative development
model for existing and new technologies. To this end,
several sponsors have worked to define the next release of
the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) and Motif. The draft
proposal of the requirements was presented to the OSF
membership at the SuperSig meeting. This raised the need for
the UEC SIG to reconsider its charter and direction. It was
proposed that the SIG reconstitute itself with a wider
charter and interest as pertains to the entire Desktop
Environment. OSF has been setting up a mailing list to
support this interest and if you would like to participate,
please email crow@osf.org with the appropriate email address.
We'll be sending information on this list with specifics
regarding the first SIG meeting.
Working in OSF for the CDE/Motif PST is Terry Landers, the
Program Manager for the CDE/Motif Next project, Martha
Hester, the Quality Advocate, and Darrell Crow, the Business
Area Manager. Questions about this Desktop Special Interest
Group can be emailed to crow@osf.org.
** OSF/MOTIF 2.0 -- The Extensibility Release
If you haven't heard about OSF/Motif 2.0, it is a major
functional release from OSF in 1994 that incorporates many
improvements over R. 1.2. The 2.0 user environment offers a

** OSF Web Tools Initiative -- Call For Users and ISV Support
The World Wide Web (WWW) is creating a major transformation
in the delivery of knowledge to society at large.
Development, usage and deployment of the World Wide Web
technology is critical for the European vendors, ISVs and
end-users.
To address the challenge, INRIA, Fraunhofer Institute and OSF
Research Institute are proposing to launch a major initiative
in Europe to make the Web technology industrially viable for
the industry at large and accelerate its deployment in
European businesses.
The intent of the Web Tools Initiative is to group several
coordinated and focused projects. This initiative is
complementary to the EEC WebCore project since its purpose is
to develop tools as opposed to Core protocols and services.
The major goals of the initiative are:
* to invent and prototype new ideas for higher level tools
targeted to end users as well as application developers
* to produce and make widely available ready-to-use software
tools that will make the Web technology usable for mission
critical business.
* to coordinate future developments in this area: it offers
an umbrella under which system and software vendors can
develop, integrate and validate applications that will
further enhance usability of the Web technology.
A major goal Web Tools Initiative is also to support the user
community. It is a central place for organizations and
businesses to:
* obtain information and training
* acquire and install software
* communicate with other parties interested in the Web
For that purpose, the Initiative also includes the
development of an Awareness Program, to contribute to the
promotion and dissemination of the Web and help deployment in
businesses. To complement the annual international
conferences, (the next three are organized respectively
by Fraunhofer, OSF RI and INRIA), WTI will organize workshops
and seminars, where companies involved in Web development as
well as organizations willing to use the technology will be
able to exchange views and learn about the new products and
recent developments. The three organizations will maintain
on-line up to date information about the related activities
and useful pointers to other active organizations. We also
intend to conduct surveys on end users to measure deployment
of the technology and requirement analysis.
As the name indicates, the focus of the Web Tools Initiative
is development of software tools for business usage. The
tools can be roughly classified as:
* Tools for Web server builders and administrators, people
who implement and administer servers, such as tools to
develop enterprise wide policies that make interactions
secure and compliant with general corporate policies
* Tools for content authoring multi-media hypertext
documents, tools for information publishers.
* Tools for classifying, filtering and indexing the enormous
amount of information available
* Tools for integration with the enterprise computing
framework, the security infra-structure, distributed
computing and legacy data encapsulation
* Tools for integration of Web with traditional desktop
tools such as electronic mail and calendaring, integration
of browsers into the desktop; as well as development of
collaborative tools for groupware
* Tools for end users, customization tools, scripting
languages, establish personal indexes and profiles
* Tools related to effective digital commerce and its
relationship with enterprise accounting and finance
management.
The Initiative consists of a series of focused projects
spread over time. For every project run under the initiative,
the plan is to tightly associate technology producers and
users. Virtually every project should associate technology
contributors (academic institutes,
system or software vendors), end-user organizations ready to
invest their own resources in order to experiment with the
technology; and ISV's prepared to commercially deploy the
results of the project.
The research institutes involved in the initiative will seek
funding for technology development, including funding from
the European Commission and national administrations or
agencies.
In order to start the initiative with pragmatic goals and
results, as well as establishing proof of concept, we are
currently planning a first project targeted to be funded by
the EEC FrameWork IV Prgramme.
For this first project, we are focusing on deployment of the
Web technology within the enterprise. We believe the Web is
going to be the primary tool for developing and accessing
corporate knowledge bases and disseminate information
corporate wide. Some early adopters are deploying corporate
internal Webs for this purpose. For this first project, we
are emphasizing specifically four aspects:
* making the technology viable for business use in terms of
security and resilience, ease of administration,
integration with databases.
* authoring of hypertext documents, following corporate
policies and corporate style, including collaborative
authoring
* integration with the desktop: integration with electronic
mail, collaborative authoring, decision making, resource
discovery aids for the user.
* developing searching and indexing techniques, possibly
following corporate or group level strategies
We are currently looking for ISV's and end-user partners who
are willing to look at participation in this project. If your
company is interested in joining our consortium and is
prepared to commit some resources to work with us on these
projects, you should contact:

PROPOSED AGENDA
During the afternoon session Henri Lowe will discuss
"Ubiquitous Transaction Processing and How to get it!"
The demand for open transaction processing (TP) is
increasing. SPIRIT sent a letter to OSF asking for TxRPC
(one of X/Open's TP interfaces supported by the ISO TP
protocol); Interactive EDI (I-EDI) will require platforms
with TP, too.
For these and other applications requiring TP, would the OSF
European End Users be interested in discussing approaches to
accelerating the availability of these services on vendor
platforms?
End Users from the banking sector would like to discuss the
following :
Linking DCE with Sybase Open client libraries. Citibank has
been having problems when a program needs to use both DCE and
Sybase libraries on an HP-9000. They would appreciate it if
you could get both HP and Sybase representatives at the
meeting to discuss the problem.
We would like to discuss with other members about the
problems and issues about administration, performance,
support etc.

ADUG Meeting Information
ADUG held their second meeting on January 17th. American
Express hosted this meeting and Robert Kalka from IBM
Endicott labs was the key speaker. Bob presented an overview
of the MVS/DCE offering which included a discussion on the
IMS & CICS Application Server features. The discussion also
included a talk on justifying DCE as a business case within a
corporation.
The ADUG group currently has approximately 20 members from
12 different Valley of the Sun companies including two from
consulting and vendor companies in Southern California. This
list also includes the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona
State University in Tempe and the Maricopa County Community
College support services.
The group has formed their own Web page with a URL:
http://www.adug.org. ADUG members may also access the list
server: adug@adug.org for information.
Possible discussion topics for future meetings may include,
but not be limited to, the following:
* Staff retooling
* Cell naming, sizes
* Schwab use of DCE
* Business Cases
* Technical discussions
* OMG, CORBA
* MOM, MQI, messaging
* Client/Server vs. DCE
* C++ w/DCE
* DBMS & DCE
ADUG is also hoping to have presentations from the following
companies during upcoming meetings:
* Open Horizon
* Transarc

Northern California Meeting Information
Notice of Inaugural Meeting
The first meeting of the Northern California DCE Users Group
will be held on March 6, 1995 at the Microsoft Regional
Office Seminar Room in Foster City, California.
The meeting will focus on the needs, concerns and suggestions
of current and potential users of OSF's DCE. DCE User Groups
have already been established in other geographical areas,
and an attempt will be made to obtain the experiences of
several such groups. OSF and user presentations will be
scheduled.
I visualize this group to (at least initially) adopt a loose
association or interest group structure, functioning with the
purpose of members sharing experiences and funneling
suggestions to OSF and the DCE-SIG.
At this point, I am looking for a headcount. Please e-mail
me if you think you can attend, with the name of your organi-
zation (no problem with more than one attendee per company).
Please feel free to forward this message to others who may
be interested in getting together.
Suggestions for the format, agenda, or other topics welcome.
Sincerely,
Dipak Basu
