OSF and Industry Announcements
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The OSF Japan Vendors Council (OSF/JVC) Announces
Formation
On December 20, 1994, the OSF Japan Vendors Council announced
their formation and explained their mission and objectives in
a major press release to 150 national press members and
opinion leaders.
The OSF Japan Vendors Council is represented by OSF Sponsor
companies and local vendor members; Hitachi, Fujitsu, NEC,
Sony, IBM, YHP, DEC, Sunsoft, Novell, ATT GIS, Oki Electric,
Nihon Unisys and Toshiba. OSF/Pacific Operations (OSF/PO) is
the convener of this and serves as facilitator and
information conduit. The X/Open Japan office has been invited
to give regular updates to the steering committee.
The group consists of a steering committee, a DCE technical
working group, a CDE technical working group, a promotion
working group and a Technology Planning group. Each group
meets once per month.
The objectives of the Council are as follows;
1) Develop and promote common definition of open systems
2) Promote awareness of OSF mechanism (PST) & technology to
the Japanese market
3) Explore use of the mechanism for joint projects
- Japan Market specific
- As contribution to worldwide market
4) Provide a forum for dissemination of information from OSF
to Japanese Vendors and from Japanese vendors back to OSF.
The promotion working group has already planned a large booth
at the upcoming Nikkei Open Systems Fair. This booth will
have 11 vendors showing a number of DCE applications,
including Encina, DFS, Tuxedo, ObjectIQ, Encompass, Procyon,
Visual DCE and the DDP demonstration. There will also be a
short video presentation and pamphlet on End User success
stories with DCE.
A comprehensive set of events and activities has been
presented to the OSF/JVC by the OSF PO. Nikkei is the first.
Others include a DCE Developers conference, an I-Lab, an End
User lunch series, Open Line, Interop, Object World, an OSF
Symposium, and other trade shows and seminars.
The Technology Planning group is a group that looks at
Japanese market requirements as well as technologies from
Japanese vendors that might be candidates for PSTs. Each
company has presented their strategy and potential
offerings and over the course of the monthly meetings, a
feasibility and consensus-building discussion will occur.
The press announcement was accompanied by endorsements from
major figures in the market. The Ministry of International
Trade and Industry (MITI) gave an unprecedented endorsement
in a one page letter signed by the Director of Information
Service Industry Division. The OSF Japan End User Steering
Committee Chairman, who is the Executive Manager of NTT's
Network and Information Systems Lab, gave a very strong
endorsement of OSF and encouraged the OSF/JVC to work hard in
accelerating OSF technology-based products to the market. The
Japan Information Systems Users Association also gave a
strong endorsement, as did the Open Client-Server Promotion
Group (OSPG) which is led by IBM.

OSF Interoperability Festival (I-FEST)
OSF is hosting its' Third Interoperability Festival
(I-FEST '95) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from June 5th
through the 16th.
OSF's Interoperability Festival (I-FEST), provides a large
scale, multi-vendor environment allowing engineers to work
closely with one another to solve interoperability issues on
a real-time interactive basis. Participants have access to
other vendor systems and their engineers, that may not be
available to them otherwise. Vendors execute OSF designated
tests in specified OSF DCE configurations creating
environments that resemble end user scenarios. Successful
participants will also complete one of the steps towards
achieving OSF DCE Certification for their implementation.
During the first week of the event, participants will test
their DCE implementations bilaterally, in a heterogeneous
environment, against each of the other participants'
platforms using the currently defined testing
requirements, in the applicable client and server
configurations. During the second week, participants' will
perform additional testing of the secure core (i.e., split
and replicated servers), as well as test DFS and
GDS products.
Registration kits and testing requirement information for
I-FEST '95 will be available in early February 1995. For
more information send mail to the contact information below.
OSF DCE Certification Program
The OSF DCE Certification program is a vehicle to ensure end
users that OSF DCE Certified products provide application,
data, and platform interoperability across DCE
implementations. The objective of the OSF DCE Certification
Program is to ensure a consistent level of DCE functional
compliance across all products, where products are defined as
a specific hardware and software configuration.
The DCE certification program certifies the Secure Core,
Distributed File System (DFS) and Global Directory Service
(GDS) components of DCE. The Secure Core component includes
the Threads (THR), Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Security
(SEC), Cell Directory Service (CDS), and the Distributed
Time Service (DTS) components of DCE.
The program consists of three parts:
1. Open Development
The program facilitates "open development" so that vendors
can cooperate in assuring interoperability before reaching
the market place. Participants are encouraged to do
comprehensive interoperability testing in multiple scenarios
and configurations and make OSF Interoperability Program
testing an integral component of their own testing.
2. Validation Test Suite (VTS)
The applicant must submit to OSF a Statement of Conformance
that their product fully complies with the OSF Application
Environment Specification / Distributed Computing (AES/DC).
The AES/DC specifies a comprehensive set of application-level
interfaces, as well as the associated semantics and
protocols, necessary to provide portable and interoperable
implementations and applications.
The OSF DCE Validation Test Suite (VTS) tests the conformance
of a vendor's DCE implementation against the portability and
interoperability specifications described in the AES/DC.
These specifications cover the syntax and semantics of the
Application Programmer's Interface (API), describe how
implementations of the client and server runtimes
communicate, describe a set of abstract services that the
runtime must implement, and specify the conformance
requirements that conforming implementations must meet.
Successful passage of the VTS is a requirement for
certification. A product successfully passes the VTS if the
entire test suite can run on the platform being certified
with no failures other than those that are explicitly waived
by OSF.
3. Interoperability Festival (I-FEST)
Another requirement for certification is to attend the OSF
Interoperability Festival (I-FEST) with the platform being
certified. Participants must successfully achieve the
testing requirements, in the applicable client and server
configurations, for the I-FEST event. For more information
about the I-FEST event see the description above.
Those products that submit the Statement of Conformance,
successfully run the VTS, and complete the I-FEST
requirements are authorized to display OSF's DCE
certification seal for that product.

European DCE Success Story
"The following letter has been reproduced with the
authorization of 'Computing,' the IT weekly magazine."
Written by Alasdair Arthur, System Architect, Mercury, UK,
the letter is entitled, "Vendors Spread Database Doubt." It
has been taken from the December 1, 1994 issue.
As someone who has been running an investigation into
distributed computing environments (DCE) for most of this
year (1994), I was interested to read the comments of the
various database vendors (Computing, 11/3/94).
The statement that DCE was 'touted as a way to add security
and administration capabilities to databases' is fine as far
as it goes, but DCE has rather wide ambitions, it is intended
to form the glue that allows a very wide variety of systems
and platforms to interoperate.
Databases are only one of the many things which can be
brought within the DCE fold. The comments of the database
vendors betray a view of the world in which the database is
central to all aspects of systems architecture.
Several of these companies have successfully promoted their
products' ability to provide cross-platform portability and
interoperability. For many users to free themselves of this
sort of proprietary approach while reaping the benefits of
interoperability. Being vendor-independent is in the
interest of early adopters of the technology.
One of the striking aspects of the article was the way in
which the database vendors announced that they were
developing DCE products, while at the same time doing their
best to spread a bit of fear, uncertainty and doubt around
the whole subject.
These companies are not adding DCE capabilities because they
can't think of anything better for their developer to do -
they are doing it because their customers are asking for
them.
The remark from the Oracle spokesperson that 'our proprietary
technology is superior to DCE' misses the point rather
spectacularly. From an end user's viewpoint, this a
contradiction in terms - a proprietary technology is, almost
by definition, a bad way of achieving multi-vendor
interoperability.
The comment from Ovum that DCE requires huge resources on
the PC is also rather peculiar. Admittedly, I speak only
from experience, rather than as a consultant, but we have not
found any such thing at Mercury after several months of
looking.
DCE is still a relatively new technology, and it is best
employed as part as a well thought-out architecture. It is
not the sort of thing that can be employed without some
forethought and preparation. But, in our experience, it does
deliver on its promise to provide genuine interoperability.

OSF/Motif Highlights - User Environment Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Desktop Interest Group
During 1994, OSF transitioned to a co-operative development
model for existing and new technologies. To this end,
several sponsors have worked to define the next release of
the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) and Motif. The draft
proposal of the requirements was presented to the OSF
membership at the SuperSig meeting. This raised the need for
the UEC SIG to reconsider its charter and direction. It was
proposed that the SIG reconstitute itself with a wider
charter and interest as pertains to the entire Desktop
Environment. OSF has been setting up a mailing list to
support this interest and if you would like to participate,
please email crow@osf.org with the appropriate email address.
We'll be sending information on this list with specifics
regarding the first SIG meeting.
Working in OSF for the CDE/Motif PST is Terry Landers, the
Program Manager for the CDE/Motif Next project, Martha
Hester, the Quality Advocate and Darrell Crow, the Business
Area Manager. Questions about this Desktop Special Interest
Group can be emailed to crow@osf.org.
OSF/MOTIF 2.0 -- The Extensibility Release
If you haven't heard about OSF/Motif 2.0, it is a major
functional release from OSF in 1994 that incorporates many
improvements over R. 1.2. The 2.0 user environment offers a
more powerful base on which to create sophisticated
applications for worldwide markets.
A thumbnail sketch includes the following:
- New extensibility features that make building widgets
easier than ever
- Seven new widgets including: container, notebook and
combobox
- UIL support of 64-bit architectures
- MWM support for virtual screen and workspace management
protocols
- Revised Style Guide: converges windows, CUA, CDE,
OSF/Motif styles
- New CD-ROM distribution for OSF/Motif 2.0.
Also available from OSF is a new release of the OSF/Motif
Validation Test Suite (VTS), for validating OSF/Motif 2.0
against the latest Application Environment Specification.
This comprehensive release is the basis of the OSF/Motif
Certification and Trademark program as well as a valuable aid
to your quality assurance process. You can obtain the
details of the certification requirements by sending email to
crow@osf.org.
Pricing for OSF/Motif 2.0 remains the same as Motif 1.2, but
offers additional cost-saving options including low prices
for single user systems and for shipping applications with
DLLs. Complete technical and licensing information can be
obtained by contacting OSF/Direct at either direct@osf.org or
617-621-7300, or contact Darrell Crow at crow@osf.org.

Operating System Research--Demonstrates Good Distributed
Performance over an Inexpensive Interconnect Using Commodity
Hardware
OSF Research Institute (RI) has been pursuing a scalability
program to extend operating system (OS) technology for high
performance computing. The RI has successfully transferred
its OS technology to a number of MPP vendors over the past 2
years. The RI is now involved in a program to demonstrate
that scalable systems can be constructed from affordable
commodity hardware. A goal is to demonstrate commodity
parallelism using clusters of workstations or PCs.
OSF RI will serve as a beta site for AT&T's new 4-way MP
Pentium machine under development. We are pleased to have
been selected by AT&T to participate in this beta test and
are looking forward to providing useful feedback to AT&T's
engineering team. We expect to use the machines in OSF RI's
SCSI Cluster Program.
The primary objective of the OSF Research Institute SCSI
Cluster Program is to demonstrate that good distributed
performance could be achieved over an inexpensive
interconnect using commodity hardware.
A secondary objective is to test and validate the flexibility
of a distributed Mach IPC service over a variety of
interconnects ranging from the very slow to the very fast
(e.g. ethernet (10mb), SCSI (20MB), and Paragon mesh (200MB))
Three node clusters have successfully been constructed. The
kernel and server are fully functional.
Results on the Pentium machines configured as a SCSI cluster
include:
- Successful demonstration of a prototype cluster system
that is affordable. It has been constructed with a
standard SCSI-2 interconnect. Performance data shows that
we can achieve throughput that far exceeds 100 Mbps
ethernet or FDDI. Furthermore, we are pushing into the
performance domain generally reserved for ATM.
- Additionally, Mach IPC is now functional over the SCSI
interconnect. We believe this is an effective
demonstration of the modularity of Mach IPC service.
A report on the other interconnects will be presented during
the February 2, 1995, OSF RI Operating System Advisory Board
Meeting.

Ken Hibbard, <hibbard@osf.org>.
