I thought the Supreme Court ruled that searches of the passenger compartment
of a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation were not legal unless (1)
the person is arrested, or (2) the officer has specific and articulable fear
to his safety.  (If the person gives consent of course, the search would be
legal.)
