A few years ago "Reason" had a very good article on the USDA. I think that the
article ran in 1989, maybe '88, could even be the first quarter of '90. (I
think I am glimpsing senility here.) Anyhoo, the article revealed how they held
an iron grip on farmers. I recall a factoid in the article that says just about
all I ever needed to know about the USDA: the USDA is far larger per farmer
than its former Soviet equivalent.
Someone more talented than I should dig it up and get it recirculating among us
again.
