"Are We Scaring Ourselves to Death?"

Letter writing campaign opportunity...
On April 21, 1994, ABC aired a special called "Are We Scaring Ourselves to
Death?" written and hosted by John Stossel. The show attacked the unreasonable
treatment of various risks in life, including crime, cancer, and environmental
pollution, by government and the media, from a pro-freedom, pro-reason
standpoint. David Boaz from the Cato institute even made an appearance on the
"open forum" part of the show. David Kelley from the IOS was in attendance,
but did not participate. Vernon posted a message a while back announcing it,
and there was some discussion on MDOP and Paul Vixie's list about it. (I have
the posts if anyone is interested.)
As you might expect, the environmentalists are in an uproar (they _really_
looked bad - not only in what was said about them, but what they said
themselves). They have taken to writing ABC and the sponsors of the show to
complain and to prevent any future programs by Stossel from airing.
If you saw this show, and appreciate the refreshing change from the normal
news drivel, please write ABC and the show's sponsors in support of it and of
John Stossel. If more programming like "Are We Scaring Ourselves..." airs, who
knows what could happen to the attitudes of society. Most of the audience
members and the "average citizens" interviewed spoke out against government
regulations, the EPA, and for a self determined view of risk assessment and
avoidance. Don't let the environmentalists reverse this picture in the eyes of
ABC and news sponsors by claiming that they speak for the true majority! This
is one area where letter writing can have a clear and immediate impact.
The Institute for Objectivist Studies (IOS) has collected the list of the
addresses to write to included below. Please send a letter! It only takes a
few moments to make up one letter to be sent to all of those listed, and you
could have direct impact in encouraging the news media and its sponsors to
continue a pro-freedom, pro-reason presentation of the news.
ABC is selling copies of the video. I will post the 800 number to call
tomorrow.
We could also arrange a public screening of it in the near future. [Anyone
have an intact copy - I missed the first and last half hours.]
