FALL 1994 KICK OFF!!

Welcome everyone to the new semester! With the recent crop of new
additions from this year's Activities Midway, we now have an announcements
membership of over 130 people! There are a lot of exciting and
interesting events planned for the new semester already, and we're
looking for interested people to make them happen. Below are some
announcements for both the new and returning members to get us all back
into the swing of things.

NEW MEMBERS:

Those of you who signed up at the Midway have been ADDED TO THIS
MAILING LIST ONLY (libertarians-announce@mit.edu). The traffic on
this list is probably less than 10 posts a month. If you wish to
be added to our other list (libertarians@mit.edu) to follow libertarian
topics of discussion, planning, or other news bits, please send a request
to libertarians-request@mit.edu asking to be added to the "libertarians"
list. Alternately, for those of you perusing our home page through
Mosaic, click on "Join our mailing list(s)" and follow the instructions
there. Watch for "A Libertarians Guide to Athena" for more info on
accessing club information via your new athena accounts. This guide will
be posted shortly.

CONTINUING AND NEW MEMBERS:

Our initial proposed calendar of events is here. WE NEED YOUR INPUT
on timing, interest and other suggestions. We'll be discussing this
somewhat at the movie night (see below) and at our first general meeting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Movie Night: DEMOLITION MAN Sept. 14, 8pm - 10pm Room 6-120

Watch the movie, meet new members, and generally engage in
social activity. This is the first big event of the year,
IT'S FREE, DON'T MISS THIS!

o Lunch with Libertarians: Starts informally THIS FRIDAY !!

Each week we get together informally at Lobdel Court for lunch and
conversation. We usually grab a table on the second floor terrace on
the river side of the cafeteria. Time and day are set for this week
only. After that we'll come up with a time that most people can fit
into their schedules

o General Meetings: Will be held ONCE A MONTH

The officers hold a general meeting each month to discuss business
and plan events. In the past this has occurred on a set date like
"the first Tuesday of the month." A first quasi-meeting will probably
precede the Demolition Man showing (come early to participate), and
then we'll start these off more regularly.

o Fire Banned Guns! Time and Date not set yet

Many of us have never had the chance to fire a gun. Now you have
the opportunity to safely and legally fire some of the very "assault
weapons" recently banned by congress, and re-affirm your Second Amendment
rights in the process. We will arrange trips to local firing ranges
through the legal owners of these weapons for a small charge. Stay tuned
for follow-up announcements.

o Meet Libertarian Candidates: October 4, 6:00pm, Courthouse Restaurant

We plan to take a trip to Courthouse restaurant in east Cambridge to
attend a meeting of the Massachusetts Libertarian Party and meet several
of their candidates and activists. The date and time may possibly
change and we need to know who is interested. There is normally an
optional (you-pay) dinner at 6pm followed by the (free) meeting. With
lots of juicy election stuff coming up in November this could be
interesting.

o Libertarian Activism: WHAT ARE YOU INTERESTED IN??????

Towards the end of last term we noticed several issues upon which
we might focus our activism for this term. Depending on the level
of interest and commitment we will form a "Activist Committee" to
meet and carry out some of these ideas:

1) What is Libertarianism? - a one or two hour discussion of libertarian
philosophy, policy and political realities. We had some lively
debate last term during a similar series, but could use some new
participants. Many of you might never have heard the word
libertarian until shortly, and might have particular interest in
the viability and tactics of the Libertarian Party. This would
probably be a one or two hour bull session one evening.

2) Computer Resources Session - We want to get together to find
"the good stuff" on the internet and computer use. Lots of user
experience can be shared on: how to find information on the Web
(using Mosaic), what is and how to use encryption (PGP) to
protect your privacy, how to send anonymous posts, and how to find
the interesting (politically at least) electronic newsgroups on
Usenet. This would probably all take place in one hour or
two long event (perhaps via athena at some designated time?)

3) UA/GSC Campaigns - Though we have not done it yet, we have talked
about "mobilizing" behind candidates for office at MIT. With
the historically low turnout, and electronic voting, a candidate
with the backing of our "party" on campus could go places. Some
of us might be interesting in working on a real campaign while
others want the experience of serving in office. Another option
is to organize a UA/GSC ballot question regarding some of the
issues we are concerned with (i.e. activities fee dispersements,
free speech issues). To make this work, we need potential
candidates, and interested activists.

4) Literature Dispersal - We have contacts with an off-campus
produced libertarian campus newspaper. We are thinking about
getting some (insert) advertisements and running issues of
the paper here. We wouldn't have to do any of the overhead
other than funding (through the ads) and distributing the
paper here on campus. The sample copy I have is interesting
and fun. Also, they're looking for contributions from
writers as well.

Please think about all of these things. None of them will be worth doing
if you are not interested in joining in. So, tell us which ones sound
interesting to you! Send us your suggestions for new events or activities.
