EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES: A FEMINIST FALLACY
by Michael Levin, Ellen Frankel Paul, David Conway, Ivy Papps,
Joan Kennedy Taylor and Wendy McElroy
(reviewed by Jim Powell)
In the name of feminism, many women demand that government enforce
preferential treatment such as affirmative action hiring and subsidized
child care. But the authors of these essays show how preferential
treatment backfires badly. They explain how, throughout history,
government has been the worst obstacle to advancement for women. They
tell how preferential treatment undermines freedom of contract and the
rule of law, both of which are essential for anyone to improve their
lot. The authors affirm that women as well as men are best protected by
competitive markets which spur employers to hire and promote the most
productive people available. The best advice for government, they
declare, is to get out of the way.
