From: brlewis@MIT.EDU
Date: Thu, 28 Jul 94 13:58:40 -0400
To: layered-athena@MIT.EDU
Present: bobmah, brlewis, carla, kcunning, nschmidt, probe, tjm
Next meeting: August 11, 9:30am in E40-316.
Bruce distributed the layered athena design document from
/mit/layerdev/doc, revised 93/05/21 by mar following public review.
Tim explained that his "Supported Unix Platforms and Future Commitments"
sheet was deliberately provocative. DCNS dev is not going to put out a
bunch of products and then say, "You have to support it." The idea is
to get a discussion going about what to do next. We have a design
document, but not a support plan, rollout plan, calendar. Tim has been
hearing "We should finish Layered Athena" from Jim, Cec and Greg.
If we only want to go forward with one or two platforms, that's fine.
We should choose platforms to go forward with based on the "market"
that's out there. Tim noted that the existence of Layered Athena on a
platform might affect its popularity, so we should look at potential
markets and not just existing ones.
The intuition of the group seemed to indicate that HP and Sun were
popular private workstations (among the 5 we have dev resources to work
on), but we thought it best to look at the existing private workstation
base at MIT.
ACTION: nschmidt will talk with Linda Lancaster about DEC and Sun.
ACTION: brlewis will talk with the Property Office and HP's Colin Powell.
ACTION: probe will find out about IBM machines.
ACTION: carla and kcunning will work on the support plan
ACTION: brlewis will give them access to /mit/layerdev/doc, so that
development of all aspects of the project/service can be found in one
place. [done as of this writing]
