I may have solved my own problem with the bootup and activation.
First, in /etc/athena/rc.conf I changed RVDCLIENT to false, which
successfully prevented bootup from trying to attach the system
libraries. But it still couldn't activate. Then I made a softlink
from /srvd to /afs/athena/system/pmax_ul4/srvd.74. This allowed the
system to activate, and I can log in now.
But I rather suspect that this was a work-around rather than a fix
of the root problem. I find that I am unable to attach directories;
it just hangs when I do. If the bootup was also having trouble attaching,
that could explain the whole problem.
So why would attach be having problems? Could it be a problem with
kerberos?
