no, the DES isn't expected to do ASN.1. Ignore that part, and just look at
the picture. It's really quite simple and similar to what is done now.
We might want to, however, provide two interfaces to the DES code: one
for this format, and one which just does CBC and padding (no cksum, no
confounder); this latter would be useful for thinks like encrypting keys in
the database.
