I was thinking about that this morning, but I'm not sure it would work easily: 1) the default BSD make has archive member stuff broken. 2) we would need to somehow generate rules for all the .o files in a make variable (e.g. something like ../../lib/libkrb5.a(foo.o) for each foo in OBJS)
