I will try to work on it later.
Regarding the "fgrep" problem - that was not a problem with configure - but
a problem with "autoheader" - which only developers might hit.
I will remove the line entirely as I have removed enough useless lines from
acconfig.h - and inserted a blank line - to break up the parsing which
caused the original problem. I reported the problem and fix to the
autoconf maintainers a year ago, but I guess we are the only group
using autoheader with so many entries....
