What platform, make, and shell are you using?
Some shells will interpret $(foo) the same as `foo`, and I've seen
some versions of make handle this in a similar way. We may want to
change the invocations to ${INSTALL} just to make sure...
@INSTALL@ is what configure looks for when it substitutes the real
value. Any makefile that uses install should have these lines changed
to say INSTALL=something/real...
