How to authenticate a user?

My apologies beforehand if this has already been discussed or is in a FAQ somewhere.
I am writing an authentication server for dial-in users. One of the
authentication methods we need to support is Kerberos V5. So my
questions are quite simple:
1) What are the API calls (and the order) that need to be made to authenticate
a given userid and password? Note that we cannot do anything with the ticket,
so we will just be throwing the ticket away.
2) Since this is an authentication server, what subset of the above API calls
can be made once as opposed to each time it attempts to authenticate a user?
