MIT has basically run on 2 Micro-vax II's since 1986. Our usage has
grown tremendously and in the last year or so, some requests seem to be
falling back to the slave. We are in the process of replacing the
kerberos servers this summer, but mostly for hardware support issues,
not performance. Kerberos caches so much and the KDC encrypts so
little, that the KDC does not need to be very performant. My advise to
you would be use whatever you have or whatever is the easiest for you to
fix after a hardware failure. An ELC should be fine.
