Sort of. There is the Moira service management system does maintain
lists and users can add/remove themselves (or others) from those lists
depending upon Moira access control. Moira pushes those lists to
various servers in various formats (mailing lists to the mail in
/usr/lib/aliases), groups to NFS and AFS servers somewhat differently.
Take a look at the Moira documents for more info. (/pub/moira on
athena-dist.mit.edu).
