I recently asked the question about Kerberos being in X11R5 on comp.protocols.x and someone from the X Consortium responded. Unfortunately, it looks like I didn't save the response. However, if I remember correctly, the jist was that Kerberos was planned for X11R5, but it didn't make it in time (Ted's explanation probably fits here). They went on to say that they hoped to provide Kerberos support later as a patch to X11R5...
