Dear JMCohen,
the note below was forwarded to me as part of our response to your
problem of journals research priot to coming to campus.
My wife has the same situation as you: an alum, working for a company
far from campus. What she does is
- use the free UnCover journals table-of-contents search service to see
what journals might have interesting sounding articles (based on table of
contents info)
- use Barton to find if MIT has the journal,
- use the Boston Library Consortium to see who else might have the journal
if MIT does not.
Then she plans her trip to MIT to maximum advantage.

The third paragraph of the page at this url:
http://libraries.mit.edu/services/blc.html has links to Uncover (which has
a telnet interface), and the BLC (which has a telnet interface). Barton
also has a telnet interface (telnet library.mit.edu, username = library,
press Enter for password).

You're right to notice that you can't get certificates if you're an alum.
The certificate has become the technical means by which MIT defines who is
in the community; being able to get a certificate hinges on having a
kerberos username. If you find someone on campus to sponsor you as a
"guest" account, then you could get further.

Good luck in your searching!
Rob
