The following are indeed two ways to refer to the same page:
http://web.mit.edu/afs/athena.mit.edu/org/t/telecom/www/
http://web.mit.edu/telecom/www/
Last year when web.mit.edu had slow periods (sometimes it was sluggish), we
made all the links on the administration page a relative url using the long
path name, so that the page could be served by different servers. For
instance, the administration page works from www.mit.edu, tute.mit.edu, etc.
The choice was to use the short URL or long; we figured since the link was
already typed, the long URL was in the users' best interest.
