I have picked up the sources to www. It is easy to compile.
There is only a text based interface, but apparently a "hypertext" based
version is available for the Next.
The front end allows searches of data in different formats. I've seen
simple menu's and keyword searches. There is an expermiental WWW->wais
gateway which is demonstrated from the top menu.
The description files apparently support the use of ftp, http (their
protocol), something called gopher, and telnet.
The hypertext files are in a format called SGML.
It is interesting to explore though. I went a complete circle when I
went through a menu which extracted info from a remote server which then
implemented a telnet to buddy-guy for tech-info.
There are descriptions of the various DB formats in the sources. I have
not really looked at the Daemon code.
I would be hesitant to commit disk space to run a server unless there
was a way to easilly move it later. I don't think we gain much by
running a server locally unless people want to investigate the
implementation a support databases.
