I will note that one of the things which is being developed for the
Student Information System is a secure mapping between a user's "secure
Kerberos principal" and MIT ID number. This could be used to link into
the circulation records, assuming that a Kerberos-authenticated
interface into them could be built.
Depending on your point of view, the secure Kerberos principal (which
can be used to retrieve your grades) may be considered overkill
security-wise if you just want to find out if you have any overdue
books, but I don't know how absolute the privacy concerns are as far as
circulation records are concerned. In any case, it should certainly be
secure enough enough.
